Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, thanks for your important question, and we earnestly implore Allah to shower all those who died in that devastating earthquake with His mercy and to help ease the plight and suffering of all the survivors.

Islam is a universal call for mercy, compassion, and solidarity. This solidarity goes far to encompass not only human beings but all living creatures in the kingdom of God.

Stressing the above concept of all-embracing mercy, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “Whoever meets the need of his brother, Allah will meet his need.” And he (peace and blessings be upon him) is also reported to have said, “Whoever relieves a believer of some of the distress of this world, Allah will relieve him of some of the distress of the Day of Resurrection. Whoever eases an insolvent's loan, Allah will make things easier for him in this world and in the Hereafter. Whoever conceals a Muslim’s faults, Allah will conceal his faults in this world and in the Hereafter. Allah will help a person so long as he helps his brother.”

Responding to the question, Dr. Sano Koutoub Moustapha, professor of jurisprudence and its principles at the International Islamic University, Malaysia, states the following:

Let us pray that Allah Almighty accept those beloved brothers and sisters who lost their lives in the recent earthquake in Iran among martyrs. It is really a painful and difficult moment for their families and relatives.

All Muslims should share their pain and sadness. They deserve our assistance and support in all possible means. For sure we shall not forget them in our prayers and du`aa’.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did one day say, “Whoever doesn’t care about the affairs of his fellow Muslims, he isn’t among them.”

He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said, “Muslims are in their mutual love and compassion like a single body; whenever a part of it suffers the whole part will suffer and share the agony and pain.”

Let us feel and share the pain and hard time of our fellow Muslims, brothers and sisters, in Iran and render them all the forms of support we can.

As for giving them zakah, there is no prohibition in doing so provided that it reaches the legal recipients.
