Title

Failed to Rescue My Wife in the Tidal Wave: Am I Responsible for Her Death?

Question

At the time of the wave, I grabbed my mother in my arms (she was ill) and began to run, holding my wife’s hand. As we started running, the water came closer and closer, I lost hold of my wife’s hand and she slipped away. I ran to higher ground and put my mother safely and ran back to look for my wife. I could not find her. Will Allah hold me responsible for my wife’ death?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, thanks for you question and we beseech Allah from the depth of our hearts to shower your wife with His mercy and to grant your ill mother a fast recovery.

Indeed, it is clear from your question that you showed no laxity in rescuing your wife. To the contrary, you tried your best and hence there is no blame on you for her death.

Responding to the question, Dr. Rif`at Fawzi, former professor of Shari`ah at Cairo University, states the following:

You mentioned in your question that you tried your best to rescue both your mother and your wife, and it is apparent from your question that your wife died as a result of the tidal wave. Hence, you are not responsible for her death.

Your wife is, in sha’ Allah, considered one of the martyrs, and she will be generously rewarded by Allah for such a tragic death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said that a martyr is, “One who dies in a plague, one who dies of intestinal ailments, one who dies of drowning, one who dies under a collapsed building, and one who dies as a martyr in jihad.”

May Allah shower your wife with His mercy and may He Almighty grant you patience and perseverance.
