Title

Working as a Fashion Designer

Question

One of my friends is very ambitious to be a fashion designer even though he will graduate from the faculty of biochemistry. He loves to buy fashion books such as Vogue and his sketching proved his talent. I told him that to be a fashion designer is not Islamic because he is more interested in designing western style and I advised him to create something that looks Islamic or maybe he can pursue another job. He says, Allah gave him the talent and he wants to use it. What is your opinion?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, thanks for your question, and we implore Allah to guide your friend to the best way through which he can better utilize his talent in a way that is lawful.

Islam encourages the Muslim to utilize his talents and God-given gifts in the best possible way. Part of using his talent in obeying Allah is to avoid using it in an unlawful way. Thus, your friend is permitted and even encouraged by Islam to use his talent as a fashion designer but he should encourage that which is morally acceptable and avoid that which is immoral.

Responding to the question, Sheikh Muhammad Al-Mukhtar Al-Shinqiti, Director of the Islamic Center of South Plains, Lubbock, Texas, states:

The way we thank Allah for the talent He gave us is to use it properly according to His teachings. People of faith, like Prophet Sulaiman (peace and blessings be upon him) attribute everything they have to Allah and understand they are put to a test by Allah, saying: "This is by the grace of my Lord! to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And if any is grateful, truly his gratitude is (a gain) for his own soul; but if any is ungrateful, truly my Lord is Free of All Needs, Supreme in Honor." (An-Naml 27: 40)

On the other hand, people who have no faith attribute everything they have to their mind and intelligence. Qarun is an example of this as he said: "This has been given to me because of a certain knowledge which I have." (Al-Qasas 28:78)

Your friend is a man of faith as he said Allah gave him this talent, so all what he needs to do is to use it in a way that pleases Allah and shows gratitude to Him. Designing clothes that are not permitted in Islam is not the way your friend should express his gratitude to Allah. I would advise him to use his talents in making or designing Islamic clothing that would be attractive to people and make them like the Islamic style of dress. In this way, he will be combining both his own personal mission and business.
