Title

Scientific Discoveries and Knowledge of the Unseen

Question

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keys to the knowledge of the unseen are five, which nobody knows but Allah. Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow; nobody knows what is in the womb; nobody knows what he will gain tomorrow; nobody knows at what place he will die; and nobody knows when it will rain" (Reported by Al-Bukhari). This is referred to in the Qur’anic verse: (Lo! Allah! With Him is knowledge of the Hour. He sendeth down the rain, and knoweth that which is in the wombs. No soul knoweth what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knoweth in what land it will die. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware.)  (Luqman 31: 34)

How can this be reconciled with the fact that scientists can now discover the sex of the fetus and the stages of its growth while it is still in its mother’s womb, and that meteorologists can forecast when and where rain will fall?

The Unseen

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake.

Every committed Muslim is certain beyond doubt that there is no comparison between modern scientific discoveries and Allah possessing the absolute knowledge of the unseen. Whatever knowledge we reach is nothing compared to Allah’s infinite knowledge.

Responding to the question, Sheikh `Abdul-Bari Az-Zamzami, a member of the Moroccan Scholars’ Association, states the following:

There is no contradiction between the content of the verse referred to in the question and the scientific discoveries reached in today’s modern age. The scientists’ discovering the sex of the fetus in the womb, for example, does not mean they have discovered the Unseen; they can learn the fetus’s sex only through using technological methods (such as ultrasound or amniocentesis). During this process, the fetus is “seen”; it is no longer “unseen”. Hence, this has nothing to do with divulging the Unseen.

So is the case with forecasting rain. It depends on meteorological data, such as the direction of wind, clouds, and the other meteorological signs of precipitation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If a cloud was formed towards the sea and then seen Levantwards (northwards), know that it would rain heavily." (Reported by Al-Bukhari) According to this hadith, if a rain cloud was formed north of the location of Madinah, this would be a sign that rain would fall on Madinah.

Thus, human knowledge is a result of serious processes of acquiring this knowledge, making a lot of research, and adopting different methods before getting to a certain conclusion in a certain field. But this is not the case with divine knowledge. Allah Almighty is not in need of making research or acquiring knowledge to know about something. He Almighty knows the Unseen without having to use any means to get such knowledge.
