Title

Inhaling Oxygen Does Not Nullify Fasting

Question

As-salamu `alaykum. My mother has a disease called lupus that affects various organs. Her lungs are affected so that when she moves around, the oxygen level in her body drops, causing her difficulty in breathing. My question is: does the use of oxygen to help her breathing break her fast?

Fasting: Rulings & Regulations, What Breaks the Fast

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, thank you very much for having confidence in us, and we hope our efforts, which are purely for Allah's Sake, meet your expectations.

Before answering your question, we would like first to state that Islam is the religion of easiness. It imposes no hardship on its followers. Referring to this, Allah Almighty says, “…Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you….” (Al-Baqarah 185)

In his response to the question, Dr. Muhammad M. M. Abu Laylah, Professor of the Islamic Studies & Comparative Religions at Al-Azhar University, states the following:

"Such use of oxygen to help your mother breathe does not break her fasting. In case harm is inflicted on her by fasting, she is permitted to break her fasting and she can offer fidyah by feeding a poor person for every single day of fast she has missed, and she does not need to make up for the fast she has missed if her sickness remains with her forever."

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to write back!

May Allah guide you to the straight path, and guide you to that which pleases Him, Amen.

Allah Almighty knows best.
