Title

Nourishing Hope of Dying a Martyr

Question

Dear respected Scholars, As-Salamu `Alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh. Our brothers and sisters in Palestine have gone to Heaven because of their glorious martyr operations. Is there any other way for me to go to Heaven? I mean, if I died in a car accident tomorrow, I am not sure that I would be judged worthy to go to Heaven. Would it be better for me to join a martyr operation?

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother in Islam, we really appreciate your question, which reflects your pure and good heart, filled with deep-rooted faith. May Allah, Most High, admit us all into Paradise, in the company of the Prophets, martyrs, and righteous people!

Brother, supporting fellow Muslims in ordeals, such as the case with the Palestinians, is a duty for every Muslim; this is the assured way of attaining Allah's pleasure and joining the martyrs in Paradise.

Focusing more on the question in point, the eminent Muslim scholar, Dr. `Abdul-Fattah `Ashoor, Professor of the Exegesis of the Qur'an at Al-Azhar Univ., states:

"Martyrdom is the utmost hope of every faithful Muslim, reflected by his love for striving in the Cause of Almighty Allah, who says: “Of the believers are men who are true to that which they covenanted with Allah. Some of them have paid their vow by death (in battle), and some of them still are waiting; and they have not altered in the least.” (Al-Ahzab: 23)

On the issue of martyrdom, faithful Muslims are of two categories:

1- Those who get killed while defending the religion of Islam;

2- And those who, while striving in Allah’s Cause, nourish the hope of dying a martyr and joining their beloved companions in Paradise.

Our dear brother, I think you belong to the second category. However, it should be borne in mind that a Muslim shouldn’t expose himself to ruin, as Allah Almighty has given warning against that in the Qur’an: “… and be not cast by your own hands to ruin…” (Al-Baqarah: 195)

Thereby you are not permitted to let your aspiration for martyrdom reach the extent of kindling the wish of getting yourself run over by a car. If you live outside Palestine, then you cannot join martyr operations. If you happen to die in a car accident, you will be considered as a martyr in the Sight of Allah; but your corpse will receive the same treatment given to those who die in a normal way, i.e., it will be washed, a thing that people don't do for the martyrs who die in the battlefield. May Allah bless your efforts and reward you!"

Brother, we'd also like to draw your attention to the hadith indicating that whoever faithfully implore Allah to honor him with martyrdom (in the cause of Allah), will attain the degree of martyrs even if he dies on his bed.

In the light of this hadith, it's clear that martyrdom is not confined to battlefield. Striving in Allah's Cause is of wide dimensions, and it suffices one to have such good feelings of sacrificing all what he has in the Cause of Allah to attain the degree of martyrs.
