Title

Lavish Tables During Ramadan

Question

Respected scholars, as-salamu `alaykum.

I am a new convert and I am used to seeing no short-age of strange practices dressed up as Islamic. One of these is the way people use Ramadan to lavish the table in a way which is not done throughout the whole year. Doesn't this sumptuousness negate the essence of Ramadan?

Jazakum Allahu Khayran.

Morals & Values, Etiquettes of Fasting

Answer

Wa `alaykum as-salamuwarahmatullahiwabarakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

First of all, we’d like to say that we are impressed by your question, which emanates from a devout soul. May Allah Almighty help us all adhere to the principles of this true Religion, Islam, and enable us to be among the dwellers of Paradise in the Hereafter, Amen.

Responding to the question, the late Sheikh Sayyed Ad-Darsh, former head of the UK Shari`ah council, states the following:

The whole business of lavishing tables with delicious foods, in contrast to normal attitude during the rest of the year, is something that clearly negates the purpose of Ramadan.

Today people have developed a strange habit of going to extremes in filling stomach with foods, as if they are saying that “Ramadan is month of food” not “month of fasting”!

However, Ramadan is a reminder to Muslims to be caring, compassionate and kind. Rather than indulging ourselves in trivialities, we should be making an effort to save more during Ramadan and giving to the less fortunate.
