Praying in a Club Dressing Room

Question

Scholars of Islam, as-Salamu `alaykum. Is it ok to pray in the men's dressing room in gyms and clubs. These dressing rooms are connected to toilets and showers. A lot of non-Muslims use them too.

Conditions of Prayer, Places of Prayer (Mosques)

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother in Islam, we would like to express our thanks and appreciation for your good question, which is an assured sign of your keenness on observing acts of worship, especially salah (prayer), the outstanding pillar of Islam.

Answering the question, Dr. `Abdel-Fattah Idrees, professor of Comparative Jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University, states:

“Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): ‘O Allah's Messenger! Which mosque was built first?’ He replied, ‘Al-Masjid Al-Haram.’ I asked, ‘Which (was built) next?’ He replied, ‘Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa (i.e. Jerusalem).’ I asked, ‘What was the period in between them?’ He replied, ‘Forty (years).’ He then added, "Wherever the time for the prayer comes upon you, perform the prayer, for all the earth is a place of worship for you." (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

Performing prayer in a clean place is one of the conditions for the validity of one’s prayer. This denotes that the Muslim is allowed to perform prayers at any place, as long as it’s clean, irrespective of whether that place is a Mosque or anywhere else.

On the basis of the above-mentioned condition, we conclude that there is nothing wrong, as far as Islam is concerned, to perform prayer in the place you mentioned in your question whether non-Muslims are accustomed to entering such places or not."

May Allah guide you to the straight path and direct you to that which pleases Him, Amen.

Allah Almighty knows best.
