Wa `alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear brother in Islam, thanks a lot for your question, which reflects your care to have a clear view of the teachings of Islam. Allah commands Muslims to refer to the people of knowledge to get themselves well-acquainted with the teachings of Islam, as well as all aspects of life.
As far as Islamic Shari`ah is concerned, there is nothing wrong with working on Fridays, as long as a man is not distracted with work from Friday Prayer (Jumu`ah Prayer). So, it should be clear that a Muslim man should be keen to attend Friday Prayer on its due time. Before and after Friday Prayer, there is nothing wrong with pursuing work during that day.
In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Canada, stated,
We, Muslims, are forbidden to be distracted with work from Friday Prayer (provided we are not exempt from attending that Prayer for v alid reasons). We are, however, free to resume our work after the Prayer.
Almighty Allah says in the Qur'an, [O you who believe, when the call is made for Prayer on Friday, then hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trading; that is better for you, if you know. And when the prayer is ended, then disperse in the land and seek of Allah's bounty and remember Allah much that you may be successful] (Al-Jumu`ah 62:9–10).
It is clear from the above verse that while we are to proceed promptly to Prayer after the Adhan (call to Prayer), we may return to work afterwards. While at work, however, we should never fail to remember Allah. In other words, we should perform our prescribed Prayers besides keeping the remembrance of Allah while being occupied with various activities.
In this way, we can transform these activities into acts of worship, meriting rewards and blessings from Allah. The ideal way to attain this is to emulate the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his daily supplications relating to diverse situations.
May Allah honor us all with celebrating His remembrance at all times. Ameen.
