Title

Just converted and my Christian husband is making my life prison-like

Question

I have newly converted to Islam. My Christian husband, hopefully soon to be my ex-husband, questions my every move and action. I feel like I am in a prison. I have no assets of my own, only what he chooses to give me even though I am the sole income earner. My dream is to return to my adopted Jordanian family, but I can not get the funds together. I feel desperate.

Answer

Welcome to the universal community of Islam. It seems you have initiated divorce proceedings with your Christian husband. Have you? If so, we are not sure why you are still living with him or supporting him with your income. How is your relationship with your own family? It is more preferable that you live with your non-Muslim family than to continue to be involved with your "soon to be ex-husband." Should it not be possible for you to return to your family, then seek out the local masjid or Islamic center for help. Perhaps the Imam can recommend a suitable family who would be willing to rent a room to you. This would be cheaper than trying to rent an apartment on your own. And the family would also be a good source of social support for you during these difficult times.

Are you living in the United States and your adopted family lives in Jordan? Is it the airline ticket that you cannot get funds together for? Please write back and provide some more details for us. We are anxious to help you out!
