Answer

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother in Islam, thank you for your interest in knowing the teachings of Islam, and we appreciate the great confidence you have in us.

Scholars who fear Allah are the ones who shoulder the responsibility of bringing back misguided Muslims to the straight path. In the past, there were great scholars who were the driving force behind activating their respective societies to fight against the oppressors, and still today scholars have a significant role to play.

Mindful of Almighty Allah and their religious responsibility, Muslim scholars nowadays can achieve similar results with regard to awakening the Muslims to the dangers that beset them. They can guide the Muslims back to the right path and remind them of the importance of fulfilling their duties towards Allah. They can wake the consciences of Muslims as well as of good people among non-Muslims toward all sorts of oppression and atrocities done against Muslims in Palestine, Iraq, and other locations.

In his response to your question, Dr. Sano Koutoub Moustapha, professor of Fiqh and its principles, International Islamic University, Malaysia, states:

Certainly, Muslim scholars have moral and intellectual duties and obligations toward this fair and human cause. They must highlight at all levels the evil humiliations and treatments which have been going on against Palestinians for decades. They have to voice their disapproval of these atrocities and educate all Muslims about the necessity of sharing the feelings of Palestinian brothers and sisters.

Surely, they have to undertake scholarly academic works that demonstrate to the whole world the terrible and inhuman treatment against helpless Palestinians. The classrooms, conferences, forums, and seminars have to be used to draw attention to and update the younger generation about these atrocities and humiliations. All Muslim scholars have been sincere with this issue. They shouldn't have any fear or hesitation in delivering and elaborating on this fair and just cause to the masses.

Furthermore, they should take part intellectually in finding ways and means to counter the oppressors. Yet, Muslim scholars have to come up with tangible ideas and practical opinions that are needed to end the occupation of Palestinian lands. There is no doubt that the scholars are seen in all communities as references to the masses; therefore they have to play their vital role in putting a quick end to the evil oppression. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “Whoever does not pay attention to or preoccupy himself with Muslims' issues is not among them.”

May Allah grant our scholars courage and strength to defend this cause to their best ability.
