Title

Being a Translator for Americans Troops in Iraq: Permissible?

Question

I would like you to clarify whether or not it is lawful to work for the American troops occupying Iraq in the field of translation or in any other field. The Muslims who work for the American troops in Iraq vary in their justifications in this regard; some say they are trying to improve their financial status and others say they are trying to help the Muslims by working with the Americans. What is the Islamic point of view in this regard?

I would like you to bear in mind that there are almost no opportunities for work since the Americans occupied Iraq. I am responsible for a family of eight. I lost my job because of the occupation and at the same time the expenses of the family are increasing. Could you please give me the answer as soon as possible?

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, we commend your pursuit of knowledge, and we earnestly implore Allah to guide you to the best way through which you can earn your sustenance in a lawful way.

It is not lawful to work in the field of translation for the American troops in Iraq because Islam dictates that Muslims must not help, in any way, those who fight against their fellow Muslims. Surely, a less paid job is better than serving the enemy of Muslims.

Responding to the question, Sheikh Ahmad Abu Halabiyah, a member of the Supreme Council for Fatwa in Al-Quds and Palestinian Territories, states the following:

"It is not permissible for you to work as a translator, or in any other field, for the occupying troops in Iraq unless your aim behind doing so is to obtain information about them in the interest of Muslim fighters. Only then will working for them be considered permissible.

If there is no such intention in working for them, it is not lawful for you to do so even if you have a large family. You should rather, look for a job elsewhere even if the money is much less than what you might have earned working with the occupiers."

Moreover, Dr. `Abdel-Fattah Idrees, Professor of Comparative Jurisprudence at Al-Azhar Univ., adds:

"Any form of work for the occupation forces in Iraq is not permissible. Moreover, any form of providing help to those who fight against the Muslims anywhere in the world is unlawful. There is a lot of evidence in the Qur'an in this regard. For example, Almighty Allah says: “Help not one another unto sin and transgression, but keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is severe in punishment” (Al-Ma’idah 5: 2)

What the Americans are doing in Iraq has reached the pinnacle of transgression. When a Muslim works for them, he is participating in shedding the blood of his fellow Muslims. In addition, helping the American troops is a kind of loyalty to the unbelievers, and the Muslim is not allowed to do this; he is not to be one of them. Allah the Almighty says, “O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk” (Al-Ma'idah 5: 51).

It is foolish for a Muslim to risk losing his Islam for a handful of dollars, let alone being guilty of participating in the atrocities perpetrated by the Americans, including shedding blood, raping Muslim women, mutilating Muslim corpses, demolishing the houses of innocent people, and even compelling Muslim men to practice homosexuality. Any human being with common sense would abhor such atrocities. Hence, Muslims should not stain their hands by rendering any kind of help to the American troops whose acts bring shame on all Americans throughout the world."

Finally, Dr. Sajid Ad-Dalimi, a Professor at the Faculty of Shari`ah, Baghdad University, concludes:

"Any Muslim working for the occupation troops in Iraq is considered a spy who betrays his country and people. The Americans are occupying Iraq and are seeking to destroy it. They are killing its people and seeking to demolish Islamic values. As well as this, we know that most of the Iraqi translators who work for the American troops inform against their fellow Iraqis who defend their country against the occupiers.

In addition, many a time those translators have refrained from conveying the complaints the Iraqi people try to submit to the American authorities in Iraq unless they are paid, or rather, bribed. They betray their country as a means of getting closer to the American troops and winning their trust."
