In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear questioner, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake.
In the first place, we would like to stress that it is categorically prohibited to cooperate with the Israelis in constructing the West Bank Wall or in building Jewish settlements as well as other Israeli establishments similar to them. Anyone who cooperates with the occupying enemy, as far as the issue in point is concerned, is committing a serious sin.
Responding to the question, the prominent Muslim scholar Sheikh `Ikrimah Sabri, the Mufti of Al-Quds and the Khatib of Al-Aqsa Mosque, states the following:
"Many are the aggressive practices done by the Israeli occupying authorities against the Palestinian people as well as the Palestinian land. The Israelis have culminated their aggressive practices with the construction of the West Bank Wall which engulfs the Palestinian land.
Indeed, the West Bank Wall leads to severing ties among the Palestinians, segregating them in isolated districts in a way that prevents the farmer from reaching his farm, the student from the school and university, the worshipers from mosques, as well as the people from visiting their relatives.
Based on the above, I can conclude that participating in constructing the West Bank Wall is a prohibited act. It is also impermissible for workers, drivers, owners of heavy machinery, and Muslim construction companies to cooperate in establishing that wall. Not only that, but every act that helps establish that wall is forbidden, and the money earned as a result is not halal money.
I would like to seize this opportunity to direct a call to Muslim countries to help ease the Palestinian plight and to enable those in authority in Palestine to solve the unemployment problems of Palestinian workers. It is stated in the hadith qudsi: "O My servants, indeed I have forbidden oppression upon Myself and I have also made it forbidden amongst yourselves, hence do not oppress each other.”
Shedding more light on the issue, Dr. `Abdel-Fattah Idrees, Professor of Comparative Jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University, adds:
"I do stress the above words of Sheikh `Ikrimah, and I can add the following:
The construction of the West Bank Wall has really prevented farmers from irrigating their lands, which are vital to their life and daily subsistence. This is surely a form of destroying the crops and the cattle. Referring to this, Allah Almighty says: “And when he turneth away (from thee) his effort in the land is to make mischief therein and to destroy the crops and the cattle; and Allah loveth not mischief.” (Al-Baqarah: 205)
Having stated the above, I add that any Palestinian Muslim who cooperates with the Jews in constructing that wall is committing a serious sin because in Islam it is forbidden to cooperate with the enemies of Islam in sin and transgression. In this context, there is no difference between the one who masterminds the idea and the one who participates in putting it into effect in real life. Both are partners in the same sinful deed."
