Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Brother, first of all, we’d like to say that we are impressed by your question, which emanates from a thoughtful heart. May Allah Almighty help us all adhere to the principles of this true religion, Islam, and enable us to be among the dwellers of Paradise in the Hereafter. Ameen.
In the eyes of Shari`ah, assisting or cooperating with the oppressor is basically rejected in Islam, regardless of whoever happens to be the victim of oppression. This is because Almighty Allah warns us against any sort of cooperation that will lead to spreading evil and mischief on earth. He says, (…help ye one another unto righteousness and pious duty. Help not one another unto sin and transgression…) (Al-Ma’idah 5: 2) Thus, assisting and cooperating with the oppressive forces in killing and capturing innocent people is absolutely haram (forbidden), as it is a grave crime and heinous sin.
In response to your question, Dr. Sano Koutoub Moustapha, professor of Fiqh and Its Principles, International Islamic University, Malaysia, states:
Thanks for your interesting question. I pray to Allah Almighty to protect our Iraqi brothers and sisters; I also pray to Him to put an end to the atrocities, difficult time and disheartening situation in which our beloved brothers and sisters are living and which they are experiencing on a daily basis. It is a real trial for all Muslims all over the world.
Indeed, Islam commands all Muslims to lend a helping hand to our Iraqi brothers and sisters. Their suffering is a suffering for every Muslim on the earth. We should all do our best to assist them in every possible way.
As for assisting an occupier in killing, capturing, or torturing a fellow Muslim, it is a great sin and crime in Islam. Islam stands for peace, security and safety for all mankind, Muslims or non-Muslims alike. Islam entirely prohibits killing or assisting someone in killing an innocent person, whether Muslim or non-Muslim. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made it clear that it is a great sin to participate in any way in killing a fellow Muslim, even by a syllable or part of a word such as ”uq” from the Arabic word ”uqtul” meaning "kill him." And in the Qur'an, it is clearly stated that killing a human being is considered as killing all mankind (see Al-Ma’idah 5: 32).
Furthermore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in his last sermon: “A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, he should not do him any injustice, nor should he surrender him to his enemy, nor should he abandon him, nor should he look down upon him. It is a grave sin to look down upon a fellow Muslim.”
In addition to that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Help your brother when he is oppressed or is an oppressor.” The Companions of the Prophet asked him how to help him if he is an oppressor, the Prophet told them to stop his oppression and injustice against others. There are so many verses and hadiths which prohibit killing or assisting in killing or destroying a fellow Muslim. On these grounds it should be known by our beloved Iraqi brothers and sisters that it is prohibited to kill or assist in killing any human being in Iraq or elsewhere in the world. Muslims all over the world have to do every means in order for them to put a quick end to the suffering and difficult situation in which our beloved Iraqis are living. The occupants must end their occupation quickly, and they should respect human rights and the dignity of the Iraqi people. All religions on the earth condemn killing innocent people. Finally, we shall continue praying to Allah the Almighty to protect and help our helpless Iraqi brothers and sisters. You can also read:
