Boycotting Products of the US & Its Allies: Obligatory?

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, thanks for your trust in us. May Allah reward you abundantly for your enthusiasm to know the teachings of your religion. We invoke Almighty Allah to protect all suffering people all over the world against oppression and injustice.

Basically, a Muslim is not allowed to assist in strengthening the economy of non-Muslims at the expense of Muslim and national economy. No doubt, boycotting the products of the countries invading Iraq is a religious obligation as well as a necessary human procedure to repel the aggressors, and it is a basic form of jihad (i.e., economic jihad).

In his response to the question in point, Sheikh Faysal Mawlawi, Deputy Chairman of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, states:

“In principle, a Muslim should buy the Islamic and national products. By doing so, he assists in developing the economy of his country and doesn’t help his enemies.

However, if he needs a product that is made by a non-Muslim country, he is allowed to buy it from this country as long as this country is not at war with Muslims.

It goes without saying that Muslims should firmly boycott the products of the US and the Zionist states because of their avowed enmity to Islam, Muslims, and Arabs. The same applies also to the UK.”

Moreover, the eminent Muslim scholar and renowned da`iyah, Sheikh `Abdel Khaliq Hasan Ash-Shareef, states:

“Generally speaking, a Muslim should not buy products of non-Muslims unless there is a necessity for this. No doubt that the economic force has become a very dangerous and effective power. So, a Muslim should by no means succumb to buy products of non-Muslims at the expense of the economy of his own country. It is to be stressed that the non-Muslim countries made a plan not to let Muslims depend on themselves, and we should not help them achieve their goal.

Basically, Muslims should be self-sufficient, and they can buy from non-Muslims who are not at war with Muslims only the necessary products that they do not have in their countries. In light of the US-led war against Iraq, boycotting products of the US and its allies is a religious obligation upon all Muslims.”
