Title

Muslims’ Reaction to the Prospect of US Attacking Afghanistan

Question

Dear Scholars, American president has just announced that the war the US is now planning against what he termed as global terrorism is tantamount to the New Crusades. By this he was referring to an ongoing plan to annihilate a Muslim population without any evidence involving them in the latest attack. So what America is planning to do is launch attack against one of the centers of Islam where Shari`ah is typically applied. My questions are: What is the role of Muslims if their fellow victimized brothers seek help and call for Jihad? What do we have to do with the Americans residing in Muslim countries, especially the US military stationed in Muslim lands? When a call for Jihad is made, shall we respond or shall we do something else?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother in Islam, first of all, we’d like to say that your question has touched a nerve, revealing the inner feelings of every Muslim around the world in the wake of the attack that targeted the WTC and Pentagon. The whole world including Muslims has condemned the attack. But its aftermath in itself has proven awesome for all.

The US has braced up for revenge, preparing to launch heavyweight attack on Afghanistan, putting the lives of innocent people at stake. This has flared up anger and criticism from all corners of Muslim world condemning counter-terrorism. But what should be the role of Muslims if Afghanistan is attacked? That is the question.

In answering the question, Dr. `Abdul Fattah `Ashoor, Professor of the Qur’anic Studies and Exegesis, Al Azhar Univ. states:

"What encourages America and its allies to plan such thing against a Muslim country, attempting to annihilate a whole population, is the sorry state of affairs of today’s Muslims. Had they noticed some sort of strength and unity in Muslims, they’d think twice before embarking on such thing.

As regards the role of Muslims if such attack is carried out or their fellow Afghan brethren seek their support, I think the only thing available for Muslims to do, away from hysterical or empty slogans and uncontrolled passion, is to make money or blood donation or any kind of such assistance if need be, and to air their condemnation of the attack in a way of sparing their brothers and themselves such terrible fate. This is the only thing available for them to do as of now.

As for the fate of the Americans residing in Muslim countries, we’ve clearly emphasized that Islam goes against blind revenge or attacking people who wage no war against Muslims. Thus, it’s not permissible to attack non-Muslims residing in Muslim countries, be they the military or civilians, regardless of their nationalities; they should never be attacked as long as they don’t attack Muslims."
