I am a shopaholic. I love browsing around stores, checking out the "vibe" and basically just having fun while I do it. Naturally, this pleasurable pastime is best indulged in on your own: no men and definitely no children. And nothing creates a greater feeling of self-satisfaction after a hard day of shopping like the feeling of having found a bargain.
So yes, I'm a bargain hunter too! A shopping bag from one of the department stores that I love frequenting because of the adorable goods on offer says "A day without shopping is a day wasted."
One day I gave this some serious thought and finally decided that this may be somewhat extreme when it comes to shopping. And in the light of the blessed month of Ramadan that is upon us, this idea seems ridiculous!
That little statement should read "A day without worshiping Allah is a day wasted," or better still, "A day without remembering Allah is a day wasted."
So what do shopping, bargains, worship, and Ramadan have in common? Simple: Ramadan is undoubtedly the best time to do some serious "shopping" for eternal reward. And at least this type of shopping won't empty out your bank account. The currency is effort, the stores are open all day and night, the prices are mind-blowing, and the "voyager miles" can be redeemed with a place in Paradise and the opportunity of gazing at the blessed countenance of Allah the Almighty. Bargain of the year? Unquestionably!
No wonder the angels spend the entire year decorating Paradise for its arrival. And for a change, I need not exercise restraint for fear of depleting cash reserves, for as long as I am willing to exert myself, I can continue shopping — my kind of shopping! I can look for small bargains, like exchanging a kind word with a friend, a word of motivation and encouragement; or perhaps sending a plate of eatables to a neighbor who could well do with such things. I can revel in the feeling of exhaustion after performing the Tarawih Prayers, knowing that I have spent a 15-hour day hungry and thirsty for the pleasure of Allah and in accordance with His command.
I can enjoy the feeling of self satisfaction when I retire to bed each night, knowing that I am alive to enjoy a month greater than all others. The feeling of satisfaction that I normally associate with a good session at the mall pales into insignificance.
So join me. You cannot plead penury, for effort is a currency that you print by yourself. No counterfeit here! Let's "shop" together and encourage one another to make the most of this blessed month. After all, it only comes once a year and we don't know when our "credit cards" will expire.
And when you're shopping, do get some for me too.
