Standing in front of the mirror, she gazes long and hard at the innocent girl standing in front of her. Tears blur her vision as the universal question lingers in her mind. Will I ever be beautiful?
Who gets to decide this? I always wondered if there is a panel of judges somewhere that I am unaware of, who get to classify who in this world is beautiful and who isn’t. I mean seriously, I believe that as humans, collectively we have redefined the idea of beauty; we have taken something pure and redefined it into something material. Someone once said that a drawing is not a work of art until someone who matters says it is. I think that we have developed the same attitude when it comes to beauty, one is not considered beautiful, until someone who really matters to them claims that they are.
The Oxford dictionary definition of beauty is, ‘A combination of qualities that give pleasure to the senses or to the mind.’ The universal meaning of beauty probably refers to the many overly done-up and overly starved movie stars who seemed to have brainwashed society into believing that beauty is all about vanity. Fair enough, every human has the desire to look and feel good and yes maintaining a good image is very important, but I think that there is a fine line between looking good and being beautiful. Getting the latest haircut and dressing up like Beyonce Knowles does not make you beautiful! If anything, it makes you fake. The problem with trying to be someone that we are not, is that we tend to get caught in this ongoing cycle; we start off by believing that we are not beautiful to begin with and so we try to emulate someone who is perceived by the world as beautiful, and then we go out and spot someone who people believe is more beautiful, so we go home defeated and start all over again from believing that we are not beautiful. In the process of trying to convince the world that we are beautiful we tend to loose our identity and so not only are you a stranger to society, but you are a stranger to yourself as well.
What I would love to know is why we are so caught up with trying to prove to the world that we are good enough. One can never find comfort in someone else until they find comfort within themselves first. If you believe that you are beautiful then by all means you are and whose opinion really counts but your own?
So coming back to my question of who decides if you are beautiful or not, you do! You decide everything that pertains to your identity - what you believe in yourself, you can make the world believe in you as well.
