To the Muslim Youth *

By  Naveed R. Butt

O my young friend

O dear Muslim youth

Have you ever wondered

About the brightness of the cluster of stars

From which you have fallen apart

You are the son of the nation

Whose feet had crushed many a king’s crown

And whose sword’s fear lurked in mighty Dara’s heart

I am a man of words

A painter in a way…,

Let me paint for you a masterpiece

A mere glimpse of the grandeur of your forefathers

But lo! You are not a man of vision

How can you ever appreciate this subtle piece of art

From the barrens of Arabia

The sand dunes of the desert

Did your forefathers

(Those people of the camels)

Cultivate a civilization

Whose fragrance reached earth’s each and every part

* Translation of Iqbal's Poem
