My Final Words

By  Yusuf Qassiem Gassiep

Image
Laying on my death bed
All on my own
I lived my life and now
Old I have grown
But death visits not only the old
Death comes at anytime
So I've been told
Allah says in the Qur'an
That every soul will taste death
So do pious actions
Before you take your last breath
My bed is now surrounded by family and friends
Each one shedding a tear
Being sent to Jahannam for my actions
Is my biggest fear
They call the doctors
To come up with a cure
But the doctors can't help me today
About that I am sure
Take my advice before it is too late
Dear brother
No one can help you in the hereafter
Not even your mother
I'm becoming weak
And death is now calling me
Helpless am I
for nowhere can I flee
Away from the angel of death ran the man
Who was in Nabi Sulayman's court
In India he would be safe from death
Or at least so he thought
My trip to the hereafter is long
And all my provisions I do not possess
Who will be able to help me
In my moments of distress
I have continued committing sin
Knowing that Allah watches me
Why have I been so ignorant
Why could I not see
Each and every action of mine
Was recorded by the angels in a book
Every small action is present in it
On the Day of Resurrection we will have a look
I ask myself will my grave be a garden
Or a pit filled with fire
Why did I commit sin
Why was I a liar?
Brothers listen to me
It's not too late to do pious deeds
We will in the hereafter
See the results of our seeds
If we sowed it for the sake of our Lord
A great reward He will us afford
But if we did actions to show everyone
In the hereafter reward for us will be none
My soul has left my body
And now I await my fate
Why did I not obey Allah and His Prophet
For now it is too late
They strip me of my garments
To give me the obligatory bath
Verily I was a fool
For having strayed from the straight path
I enter the masjid the 'House of Allah'
Carried by four men
Before this when did I visit the masjid
I can't even recall when
They start the funeral prayer
Takbeers there are four
This was my end
And of time I possess no more
My close relatives and friends
Carry me to my grave
I'm all on my own right now
And I can not be saved
They put me in my grave
And cover me with sand
Please O Lord may I be of those
Who receive their books in their right hand
My friends and family leave me
And now they are on their way
Arguing and fighting over inheritance
On the very first day
Day and night I worked
To provide for my children and wife
Very little good deed I've done in my long life
Along came the angels to question me
I'm unable to reply
Prepare for this day dear friends
Don't wait till the day that you die
"Be in this world like a stranger"
Always keep these words in mind
In Tirmidhi and Bukhari
This hadeeth we will find
"Work for the hereafter as if you will die tomorrow"
Take heed of these words
Before the time of sorrow
These were not the words of the Prophet
Like so many people think
Instead it was said by the son of 'Umar
And recorded by the scholars in ink
what is this?
