Darkness and Light

By  Bibi Ayesha Wadvalla

Lost in a world of bright lights

I don’t feel the sting of the devil’s bite

My ears are deaf to the voices of the angels

I only hear the sound of the casino tables

This world is a playground ,and I want to enjoy it all

I’m too young to fall

Don’t judge me ,with your beards and veils

Not too long ago ,your elders echoed the very wail

I’ll grow up one day and then I’ll change

One day-when I make the pilgrimage

My life is perfect as it is - don’t you see

My lifestyle makes me popular - it’s why my peers love me

And if I change - then who will I be?

Just another nobody

Lost in a world of bright lights

I’m immune to the dangers of the dark night

But one day the lights go out

And I’m forced to find my way about

My heart and soul call to me - and how sweet they sound

I hear the truth they speak, and the devils voice is drowned.

They guide me forward, and I surrender to the peace they exude

I am free from my hellish interlude

Safe in a world of natural light

I’m grateful to have been shown the light

No longer am I filled with angst - I’m now sure of who I am

I’m not just another nobody

I’m respected for my modesty

I’m respected for my piety

Safe in a world of natural light

I cry for those who still roam the night.

I wish they can feel the peace that comes from within

When one accepts God’s Will
