What do you want to be when you grow up?

I was asked this wonderfully boring question: What do you want to become? First, I said I wanted to be a veterinarian to treat animals especially cats, but then what if I end up being a treat for a lion? I don’t want to get eaten by a lion. Well, forget about that job. Next, it was to be a teacher, then, a social worker. Anyone who is asked such a question will probably go through the same kind of ideas and so it goes on and on till you finally reach the point when you decide what you want to do, or you stay stuck with what you are.

So what do you want to do? What dreams do you wish to fulfill? There’s the usual answer “I want to be rich” or “I want to be famous”. O.K. so you want to be rich and have a lot of money? That’s nice but how are you going to become rich, and what are you going to do with all that money? You still have to think about an answer because just being rich is a bit too vague. Are you going to be a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, an accountant or even an astronaut to get to the “rich and famous”?

Is it enough to just decide on what kind of job you’d like to do when you grow up? No, you need to put it in your head that you want to do this job and be useful. We weren’t created to just live and die. I mean, we’ve got stuff to do here. Like for example, I’d like to be a doctor and find a treatment for a certain disease, or I’d like to be a computer programmer and make these really cool games or some kind of program.

We should try to be useful for our community or even the whole world. I’m not going to say big words on the subject of “being useful to the community” like some grown-ups do. O.K. just think about yourself then, you want to be rich and famous. Well, I’d say the only way to be rich and famous would be to do a good job at whatever you’re doing. And so you end up being useful whether you like it or not. So, why don’t you just do things because you want to help other people? It will probably make you a lot better and because you’ll then have a goal you’ll even do a better job.

So why don’t you spend some time with yourself and imagine what you’d like to do? And don’t worry about over imagining because maybe you could be the first one to do it, who knows? Just think of something no matter how hard it is to achieve and as long as you believe in it you’ll reach you goal with Allah’s help.

O.K. ready? Let’s start again. What would you like to be when you grow up?

This widget will help you to store, organize, search, and manage your favorite online content through a range of social bookmarking services. These services permit users to save links to websites that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, but can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, or shared only inside certain networks. Authorized people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or through a search engine. Most social bookmarking services also permit their users to vote and rank public bookmarks to determine which are the best ones according to the number of votes they get.
