Japan's NEC To Develop World's Most Powerful Computer

TOKYO (AFP) - NEC Corporation said it would develop the world's most powerful computer for Japan's space research project.

The "Earth Simulator" computer had been ordered by a research center jointly operated by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) and other natural science research institutes, NEC said in a statement.

"The Earth Simulator project is designed to enable environmental research through analysis and simulation of the global environment through the realization of a 'virtual planet earth'," the Japanese firm said.

The computer, capable of "accurate modeling of geophysical, climate and weather-related phenomena," would be built by March 2002, it said. The new computer would have a capacity to perform 40 trillion operations per second, NEC said
