Samsung Develops World's First 512-Megabit DRAM Chip

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korean semiconductor giant Samsung Electronics Co. has developed the world's first 512-megabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip, the company said. Samsung expects the new product to hit the market next year and forecast demand for the new chips would soar to $41.1 billion by 2004.

"Because the new device can be assembled in the same plastic package as the 256-megabit DRAM, memory upgrades will be easily achieved," Samsung said. "The size and flexibility of the 512-megabit DRAM is a timely response to market and technology changes, ushering in a new generation of high-capacity memory chips," said Vice President Chang Gyu-Hwang
