Lloyds of London Suspends Website After Pirates Visit

LONDON, Jan 2 (AFP) - The insurance giant Lloyds of London temporarily shut down its Internet site Sunday (Jan. 2) after discovering it had twice been broken into by a computer hacker, a spokeswoman said. "We have had one person attack the site on two occasions in the last 12 hours. As a result, we have closed down the site until we can find out how they got in. At this time, there are no implications for other Lloyds systems," the spokeswoman said.

The website provides information for brokers and agents working on the Lloyds market, but is not used to carry out any business transactions, she added. Lloyds is run by an independent company and has no connections to the company's other computer systems, the spokeswoman said.

Several major British and foreign firms decided to suspend their electronic mail systems over the new year period amid fears that hackers might unleash crippling computer viruses, the London-based Financial Times reported last week.

The way that the company found out about the hacker intruding on their site was that the hacker simply left messages behind. The incident had nothing to do with the rollover to the year 2000.
