CAIRO, Jan 2 (AFP) - Prime Minister Atef Ebeid and Egyptian-American Nobel Prize winner Ahmed Zewail attended the cornerstone-laying ceremony for Egypt's hi-tech university in south suburban Cairo, the government's Al-Ahram newspaper reported Sunday (Jan. 2).
As part of President Hosni Mubarak's project to create a new technology research base in Egypt, the university is being built in October 6 City and will be running in five years. Ebeid said, "The government will provide all the technology, funding and necessary equipment." Central to the make-up of the university is that it will have seven branches with specializations ranging from atomic energy and space science to genetics.
Zewail's part in this project is to select the professors for the university. He became famous for his 1999 Nobel Prize, which he won for chemistry
