First Muslims in Europe Charter

Read and Comment

The European Muslims Page advances the attempts by European Muslim scholars, intellectuals, and activists to reevaluate their positions in order to arrive at intellectual, judicial, and practical frames of reference that are adapted to Muslims in European contexts.

One such attempt is that of the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Europe (FIOE), which has issued the first charter on relations between Muslims in Europe and their societies. The document was signed by the major Islamic organizations across the continent.

FIOE secretary general Emad Al-Banani told IslamOnline.net on March 23, 2006, that it took four years to draft the Muslims in Europe Charter.

The document outlines inter-Muslim relations as well as relations between Muslims and their European societies. The charter deals with bases of understanding Islam, principles of interaction among Muslims, citizenship, and Islam's contribution to Europe.

We publish the text of the charter in full and open the door for comments on it. We have received one of the first commentaries on the charter project by Bashy Quraishy, chairman of the European Network Against Racism (ENAR) in Belgium.

We welcome your comments on the charter project whether you represent an organization or yourself. Do not hesitate to take part in this discussion, through which European Muslims can develop their views and stances.
