India Attacks (Timeline)

CAIRO – The deadly attacks in India's western city of Mumbai on Wednesday, November 27, are latest episode in a series of attacks that hit the South Asian giant over the past two decades.

Following is a chronology of the major attacks since 1993.

1993

March 12

At least 257 people were killed and more than 1000 injured in a series of 15 coordinated bomb attacks in Mumbai. The attacks were seen as retaliation for anti-Muslim riots that left hundreds dead.

1998

February 14

A string of 13 car bombs in Coimbatore city in the eastern state of Tamil Nadu killed 46 and injured more than 200. Officials blamed the attacks on the shadowy "Al Umma" group.

2001

December 13

Seven people were killed when five gunmen, one wearing an explosives vest, attacked the parliament complex in New Delhi. Four members of the Jaish-e-Mohammed group have been convicted over involvement.

2002

May 29

Twelve people were injured in Ahmedabad, the largest city in the Muslim-majority state of Gujarat, after a series of crude bomb blasts that targeted buses.

2003

March 13

A bomb attack outside a commuter train in Mumbai killed eleven people.

August 25

Two car bombs in Mumbai killed 60 people and injured 150 others. No group claimed responsibility, but authorities blamed Lashkar-e-Taiba group.

2004

August 15

Sixteen people, mostly schoolchildren, were killed and dozens injured after a bomb blast in northeastern Assam state.

2005

October 29

Three powerful explosions in busy New Delhi markets killed 61 people and injured 210. The little-known Islami Inqilabi Mahaz Kashmir group claimed responsibility. The authorities, however, blamed Lashkar-e-Taiba.

2006

March 7

Three explosions in a train station and a temple in Varanasi killed at least 15 people and injured 60.

July 11

Seven powerful blasts in crowed railway stations in Mumbai killed 187 and injured 700. The attack was blamed on Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

September 8

A string of three blasts, including one in a mosque, killed 32 and injured 100 in the southern city of Malegaon in the Muslim-majority Maharashtra state.

2007

February 19

Two bomb explosions hit the Pakistan-bound Friendship Express passenger train, killing 66 passengers, mostly Pakistanis. Officials blamed terrorists trying to derail India-Pakistan peace talks.

May 18

A bomb explosion at the historic Mecca mosque in Hyderabad killed 11 worshippers and injured 15 others. Police later shoot dead five people in clashes with hundreds of Muslims who protested the attack.

August 25

At least 40 were killed and 50 injured in two bomb explosions in a park and a restaurant in Hyderabad. Indian officials blamed "anti-social elements" trying to spread communal violence.

November 23

At least 13 people were killed in a string of coordinated explosions at courthouse complexes in Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad in the north state of Uttar Pradesh.

2008

May 13

Eighty people were killed and at least 150 injured in seven bombings at the markets and outside Hindu temples in the northern tourist city of Jaipur. A group called "Indian Mujahideen" claimed responsibility.

July 25

Eight limited scale bombings hit the IT city of Bangalore, killing at least one and injuring 15. Indian Mujahideen claimed the attack.

July 26

At least 45 were killed and 160 others injured in a series of no less than 16 bomb attacks in Ahmedabad city targeting markets, residential places and hospitals.The Indian Mujahideen group sent a claim responsibility before the attacks.

September 13

Some 18 people were killed and 90 others injured in a string of explosions that hit the markets area in New Delhi. The Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility.

Another explosion at a market in Malegaon, the capital of Maharashtra state, killed seven and injured other 82.

October 22

Seventeen people were killed and 30 others injured in a powerful bomb explosion in the northeast city of Imphal, on the border with Myanmar.

October 30

A series of at least 10 blasts in the north-eastern city of Assam killed at least 40 and injured other 150. The attacks were claimed by an unknown group called the "Islamic Security Force-Indian Mujahedeen".

November 26

A series of coordinated attacks against luxury hotels and other targets in Mumbai killed at least 125 people and injured some 327 others. A previously unknown group calling itself "Deccan Mujahideen" claimed responsibility.
