In the Glorious Qur'an, Allah the Almighty says, narrating what Prophet Ibrahim said, [Lo! I am migrating to my Lord. Lo! He, only He, is the Mighty, the Wise.) (Al-`Ankabut 29: 26)
Imam Abu al-Faraj Ibn Al-Jawzi said in Zad Al-Masir fi `Ilm Al-Tafsir: "One of the two explanations of migration in this verse is that he is migrating to the pleasure of his Lord."
Of course, prophets do not migrate from a low state to a higher state in faith, but rather from a high state to a higher state. Scholars describe this as excelling in the ladder of perfection. The rest of humanity fall into sins, they have set-backs and they are always in need of deserting the "land of sins", and migrating to the "land of worship and servitude."
In this regard, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was reported to have said,
"The muhajir is the one who avoids what Allah has forbidden." (Al-Bukhari)
Based on the above, scholars say that deserting the sin is the first step of repentance; but how should we take this step? Many of us succeed in giving up our sins, however, there are those of us who would like to take this step but are hesitant or do not know how.
Unfortunately, many of our brothers and sisters have become addicted to certain sins and devilish insinuations make it seem impossible that they would ever quit them. We want to tell these brothers and sisters that it is not impossible to desert a sin. If you have any advice on how to desert a certain sin, whether from something you read or from your own experience, do not hesitate to share it with us.
Do not deprive yourself from obtaining the reward of giving advice to your fellow Muslims. May Allah the Almighty assist you as you assist others.
