Since its independence in 1957, Malaysia has led 50 years of economic, cultural and political development.

Malaysia is multi-ethnic but Islam is the official religion. However, there is a lot of debate over whether Malaysia is truly an Islamic country. Some of our readers have told us that this is not true.

Appearance vs. Reality

Below are some of the readers' comments on our Shah Alam Mosque  article that throw light on the debate:

"Malaysia is not as Islamic as you dream it to be," says Visitor.

Visitor supports this statement by saying that although the country is Islamic and the government has strict dress code, women do not abide to it; for example, they do not cover their heads. Concerning men, Visitor says that they are obsessed with football and have a strong desire to drive fast bikes.

On the other hand, Alexis says that "Malaysia is much devoted toward Islam compare[d] to other countr[ies]." He says that one should look at the positive side not only the weaknesses.
