Already many days of this blessed month has left us. The disquiet in our souls starts its tremors as you realize that during these days you are doing something different. How different though is something only we can answer ourselves in our moments of solitude. We are ever so careful to protect the things we have accumulated-clothing, books, houses, cars, technology but that which is most priceless, seems to have slipped from our grasp.
The heart, is like a rose bud so treat it well, care for it, fertilize it, give it the benefit of the sun's warmth and the nurturing of water and it will blossom and bring with it a sweet fragrance. When we leave it alone, it can become overwhelmed by weeds, losing the light of sun and benefit of water and it may be attacked by disease, then it begins to die or if it blooms, it is not the true beauty it could have been.
In His infinite mercy, He gave us a most noble example to shine a light for us on this well-trodden path of life. Our beloved Prophet -may the peace and blessings of Almighty Allah be upon Him. He- was the embodiment of the Qur'an; living, breathing and walking…described as "uswatun hasana"- the most perfect example.
His was not the life of blackberries, MAC's vs. PC's, Plasma TV's, GQ clothes, sports cars, fancy shoes or 5 star hotels. His priorities were to protect and nurture his heart and utilize the opportunity that Allah the Almighty gave to him to bring benefit to Allah's creation. How do we fare when we compare our lives to his (peace be upon him)? He used to only eat a little; sometimes a fire would not be lit in his home for days- while we rush to have 7 course iftars. He slept on dried palm leaves, and no one could differentiate him by his dress. He did not sleep if there was money in his home except that he would rush out to give it to those who needed it more than he did. How do we fare, when we think of the sacrifices he made for us to be here today? When his tears and blood trickled down his body in Taif, pleading to Allah – "Allah "if you are pleased with me, then I have not lost".
What about us brothers and sisters, what have we won and lost? What have we kept for ourselves in the Hereafter? If our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were with you right now, would you be pleased? Would you dress the way you do? Say the things you say? Keep the company of those you call friends? How much of your time would be spent watching TV? Listening to music, praying your Salat? How would you treat your children? Your parents? Your wife/husband? What would be your priority then? Would you stuff yourself at Iftar, when there are people in your community going hungry? How would you help those who are less fortunate than you? Would you? Do you now?
Our Prophet's (peace be upon him) love for us has been extended to the opportunity that Allah will give him on the Day of Judgment to intercede on our behalf. It is never too late to return to this path; to be stronger, to gain the strength we need, to turn to Allah, scared because of all of our sins and mistakes but we must remember that His mercy exceeds His wrath. Truly He is a merciful Lord! He loves you and all of us and wants only for us to succeed. Let us today, make a commitment to bring our hearts back home to the source of the light that will nurture it. The light that will take away the darkness. And now, there is no better time, as the biggest distraction has been chained away, thereby making room for our roses to bloom brightly again. A few days have passed, let us not lose all that this month has to offer.
