Hugo Chavez

Biography

Image
In May 2006, he was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people. Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela, is an ardent critic of neoliberal globalization and US foreign policy. He wants to revolutionize the way developing countries deal with the major power by acting against the Washington consensus in supporting alternative models of economic development and advocating cooperation among the world's poor nations, especially those in Latin America. Chavez remains one of the most complex, controversial, and interesting figures in contemporary politics.

As a former military officer, he is accustomed to the language of battle and he thrives under attack. Chavez is a genuinely revolutionary figure, one of those larger-than-life characters who surface regularly in the history of Latin America and achieve power perhaps twice in 100 years. He wants to change the history of the continent. He never stops talking and he never stops working. He has time for everyone and never forgets a face.
