Those who exploited this situation preyed on the inferiority complex of muslims worldwide, and their felling they are not "respected" by the west. WHO CARES?
Also, free speech, in the western sense, in the liberal democratic tradition (something that many uneducated rural muslims don't understand, as it involves recognizing the rights of the INDIVIDUAL) absolutely includes the freedom to be offensive or insult... it also means that the person being insulted has to consider the source, and consider what it is they are trying to accomplish before blindly reacting
