| Question |
In these blessed nights Muslims perform tahjjud. What is tahjjud? And what is its time?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you and may Allah accept our fasting. Tahjjud means performing prayers at night. Allah recommended the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to perform more prayers thus Allah will protect him and give him higher position in this world and in the Hereafter.
In this regard, a Muslim is strongly recommended to perform more prayers at night especially during the month of Ramadan. Thus, do your best and do spend some of your times in reading the Qur’an.

| Question |
Dear Dr. Sano. There is a question that may trouble women in these days; if a woman was in her menses in these days, she would be deprived of fasting and offering night prayers. Are there any alternative acts of worship for such a woman to perform in these days? How can a woman in such a situation spend her time in these days and how she could gain the great favors and rewards of these days?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you and may Allah reward for this wonderful and great feeling. However, a woman shouldn’t feel deprived because of her natural health condition. Thus, Islam would like woman to relax during her period and she will be rewarded for all her good deeds before the arrival of menstruation. In other words, she doesn't actually miss any thing.
Therefore, woman should take it very easy as a normal phenomenon in her life.
As for what a woman should do while staying in the period during the month of Ramadan, there are so many other worship acts she can do such as reading the Qur’an, especially the translation. I am aware of the opinion saying a menstruating woman cannot touch the Qur’an. To the best of my knowledge this opinion is not accurate or authentic thus its sources are weak and they are all ijtihadic in their nature. The Qur’an didn't prevent woman from touching the Qur’an and the verses which some scholars used to conclude that prevention those verses don't refer to menstruating woman but to the Satans who are not pure but all Muslim men as women are considered pure and clean by the faith of Islam. However, no scholar opposes that she can touch the translation of the Qur’an and read it as much as she can.
In addition to this, she can undertake so many good deeds such as helping needy and visiting parents, attending lectures and performing any good and recommended deeds by Islam.
Certainly, prayer is not the only devotion a Muslim would have to do but there are so many other devotions. Doing any of them in the month of Ramadan you will get double reward of Allah. All in all, do any recommended devotion except prayer and tawaf. May Allah accept your `ibadah and grant you His Mercy and Blessings.

| Question |
Some people believe that not every one can get the great rewards of this night. They believe that only a few blessed people would be favored to know Laylat Al-Qadr, see its light, and take its advantage. Is there any basis for this belief? In other words, is Laylat al-Qadr for all Muslims or only for special persons among them?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you and May Allah grant all of us the opportunity to witness Laylat al-Qadr which is meant for all Muslims regardless their genders or health status. In other words it is for all living Muslims in the world. Whoever is blessed to witness it while staying in the state of sickness or menstruation or child-birth he or she will get the great reward. Therefore, you have to do your best and work hard.
As for when it is and if there is any signs or light, I shall tell you that no body knows when it will be exactly as the holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said and recommended Muslims to look for it in the last nights of Ramadan especially during the nights of the following days in Ramadan: 21, 23, 25, 25, 27, 29. The Prophet used to increase and wake up his spouses during the last ten days of Ramadan and he did tell them to increase their Istighfar, dhikr, tawba, prayers and all good deeds.
Let us pray that Allah helps us to witness this great and unique night. Let us not forget to pray for our fellow Muslims in Iraq, Palestine, Thailand etc.. who are living in this month under the oppression, humiliation and occupation of their lands. Do include them in your du`aa’ and prayers, may Allah help them and punish the oppressors and unjust people. Let us also prayer for our fellow Muslims who are sick or facing problems and difficult times with their beloved ones. May Allah accept all of them in Laylat al-Qadr.
Allah Almighty knows best.

| Question |
Which Mosque has more rights over you (i.e. to offer your Salah), your local one or the main town centre one? The local one is just behind my house but the main one is a lot bigger.
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you, you are recommended to pray in any mosque you wish and there is no a specific mosque that you must pray in. However, you are rewarded based on the efforts you do spend to go the mosque and the number of the fellow Muslims you meet . Meaning you will get more reward if you go to the farer mosque, because of the time and effort you will be spending in going and coming. This is just a recommendation not an obligation at all and one should not evaluate the belief of the people based on this matter.

| Question |
Unfortunately, some Muslims change for the worse after Ramadan. Once Ramadan is over, they avert from worship, devotion and god manners and deeds they used to offer in Ramadan. They indulge once again in sins and acts of disobedience, and neglect the obligatory prayers and the acts of worship. What are the reasons for this phenomenon and what are the effects of such indulgence on the person and on his worship in Ramadan?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you and you are very right in whatever you said. It is disheartening and very sad to see this happening in the lives of many of us.
Certainly, there is a need not to bear in mind that Allah who we worship in Ramadan is the same God Who we have to worship after Ramadan. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) always prays Allah to protect him from deviating His right path and strengthen his heart and soul so he will always remember Allah and refrain from disobediences. Do pray for yourself and all beloved brothers and sisters whom will forget the good deeds and behavior that they have during the month of Ramadan.
And all of us should keep praying Allah to give us more taqwa and protect us against the Shaitan.

| Question |
As-salamu `alaykum. If I have intercourse at night, can I fast the next day without taking my obligatory bath early in the morning at suhur? If yes, then by what time in the morning I should be pure?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you. There is no harm in having sexual intercourse during the night of Ramadan. Thus the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do that and it doesn’t affect his fasting. However, you are strongly recommended to perform Ghusl as soon as you wake up. Thus, you have to perform Fajr on time.
