Question As-Salamu `alaykum. Can we say qunut in Taraweeh and other Prayers asking Allah to alleviate the suffering of the quake victims?

Thanks
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear sister in Islam, thanks a lot for you question.

In fact, we ask Allah from the depths of our hearts to alleviate the suffering and pains of the destructive quake victims.

As for making du`aa' and qunut for those afflicted people, it is the lest a Muslim can do for his suffering brothers and sisters. A Muslim has to resort to Allah and earnestly ask Him, Most High, to alleviate the pains of those people. Du`aa' can be made in Qunut—in the Witr and Fajr Prayer—and in sujud and in all others optimum times of making du`aa'.

Ramadan is the month of mercy and solidarity, Muslims, therefore, have to share the pains of their brothers and sisters in humanity and to spare no efforts in giving a helping hand to them.

In addition to making du`aa', other forms of aid are highly encouraged such as donations, medical care, etc.

Question As-Salamu `alaykum.

Can we Muslims send Zakatul-Fitr to Muslims afflicted by the recent quake that hit South Asia?
Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

First of all, we ask Allah Almighty to help the victims of the disasters and to grant them patience and piety.

It is absolutely permissible to send zakatul-Fitr to fellow Muslims who are afflicted in the recent disastrous earthquake that hit South Asian countries. It is also permissible to help them from Zakah money and charities bearing into consideration that in times of crises or disasters, Muslims should precede others in giving a helping hand to the afflicted people. However, we'd like to pay your attention to the fact that aids should be organized to be from the type needed by the afflicted people.

May Allah reward you and protect you against disasters and evils.

Question Salam

Which takes priority, going to a second `Umrah in Ramadan or helping the suffering people afflicted with the quake in South Asia?

Jaz
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Thanks for your question, and we earnestly implore Allah; the Creator of Heavens and Earth to alleviate the suffering of all the afflicted people in the four corners of this globe. May He Almighty bless us all in this blessed month and may He Almighty rescue us all from all sorts of calamities and adversities.

It is clear from the question that the first `Umrah in Ramadan has been performed, and the questioner is yearning for a second `Umrah during this blessed month to get a multiple reward. No doubt that the performance of `Umrah is a very righteous act especially in this blessed month, but also extending the helping hand to those in affliction at such critical times merits even greater consideration.

In our daily lives, we should be more observing to what may be termed as Fiqh Al-Muwazanat in which we should strike an equitable balance while preferring a certain act to the other keeping in mind the time, the place and surrounding circumstances.

With the above in mind, we see that giving priority to helping the suffering people afflicted with the quake in South Asia is much needed at such critical time with the death toll in the rise. According to the recent statistics, the number of deaths has reached 19, 400 and hence all of us should take part in the relief efforts each according to his/her means. The least we can do is to make du`aa' for them so that Allah alleviates their suffering and put a quick end to this human tragedy.

Question How Muslims, specially in Europe, help their brothers and sisters in south Asia, who are suffering from the quake?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Thanks for your question which shows your apparent keenness to busy yourself with the affairs of Muslims.

Indeed, Muslims in Europe are part and parcel of the whole Muslim Ummah. In any far or near spot in the four corners of the globe all Muslims constitute one entity and one body if any part of it aches the whole body aches as a result.

With this wider view of humanistic and comprehensive perspective, we can say that Muslims in Europe can help their brothers and sisters in south Asia who are suffering from the quake by applying the following tips:

1. Donating money to their brothers and sisters in the afflicted areas.

2. Raising funds in their local Muslim communities making use of the blessed month of Ramadan to urge Muslims to give to their brothers and sisters in charity.

3. Sending their money through reliable organizations and through other legal channels.

4. Help pressurize their local governments to give all forms of assistance to those afflicted by such quakes.

5. Educating the younger generations about the comprehensive sense of belonging to the greater entity of the Muslim Ummah, and the fact that such younger generations in rich European countries should try their best to provide their brothers and sisters in afflicted areas with all forms of physical, psychological, spiritual and financial assistance.

6. Muslims in such parts of the world should remember the bereaved mothers, the fatherless children and demolished homes in such afflicted areas and they should be moved by such horrific scenes they watch in the media to make sincere supplication to Allah so that He Almighty rescue all human beings from all sources of evils and bless the whole humanity with social peace and inner tranquility.

7. Muslims in Europe should always remember their Muslim brothers and sisters in their supplication right before the 'iftar.

Question Salam

Should Muslim focus on spiritual acts of worship in Ramadan such as reading the Qura'n and making dhikr, or on helping the victims of the South Asia quake?
Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother in Islam, thanks a lot for your question which is a sign of your good faith and kind heart. May Allah grant you happy and blessed Ramadan!

You should strike balance between doing spiritual acts of worship in Ramadan and participating in the aid activities that afflicted people are in dire need of. There is no contradiction between both because both are required especially in times of crises or disasters. The afflicted people are in need of different kinds of aids: they need material aid as well as spiritual aid by our du`aa's (supplications) for them and through encouraging people to give a helping hand to the victims and asking Allah Almighty to grant the afflicted Muslims patience and mercy.

Question Al Salamo Alaykom
My question is related to work issues. I work in USAID which is an international/American organization. My question is basically would it be haram to work in international organizations like USAID even if what the person is doing is totally halal?

In other words, working in a project that handles training but is financed by USAID money is halal or haram? The reason I am asking this is that an organization like USAID has other political motives other than helping developing countries? Some studies has said that these “international organizations” have helped in the deterioration of Egypt’s economic conditions ( Egypt is my country). Others say that these organizations have access to all the information that they need about a certain country through these development projects. The rhetoric is endless. But as a person, should the Muslim be concerned with oneself only and what his job description is or would it be crucial to look at the bigger picture concerning the whole world politics? If it is haram why it is haram and what would be the alternative since Americans are always involved in a lot of companies?

Question Salaam,

Respected teacher, I have noticed in mosque that the imam has started saying du`aa for the brothers and sisters that have been affected by the tragedy in Asia. I too say a du`aa for them and pray that Allah has mercy on the souls of those who have lost their lives.

I was wondering if a du`aa should also be made for the people in America, who are also suffering due to a natural disaster, even though it is assumed that most of them are not Muslims.

Thank You
Salaam
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Thanks for your question, and we earnestly implore Allah to guide us all to the best.

There is nothing wrong that one makes a general du`aa for all those afflicted by natural disasters so that Allah alleviates their human suffering. No doubt that there are many lost people in natural disasters here and there, and hence there is nothing wrong with our human supplication to alleviate their suffering and make such disasters a way towards their guidance. Islam is for all humanity. Therefore, a Muslim is to ask Allah to bless all humans, specially with the light of Islam, and alleviate the sufferings and pains of all peoples.

Question Salam, My question is a bit different to the topic but related. Today I had a discussion with another sister who is from Pakistan and her family lives in the quake affected area about the calamity. She asked me a question and I had a bit difficulty in answering her so I thought it would be best to ask you. Her question was when the natural disasters came to USA, it was almost unanimous agreement that it is Allah's wrath on them, but why a Muslim country like Pakistan, who haven't done anything like this? I would really appreciate if you could answer this for me so that I can share it with her and also others who have the same sort of thinking, inshallah.

Jazakallah Kheir

Dear sister in Islam, thanks a lot for your question and we ask Allah Almighty to alleviate the suffering of afflicted people in the four corners of the globe.

In fact, earthquakes, hurricanes and other disasters may be a punishment from Allah or a test for people. It may be a punishment for the oppressors and a test for the believers. It is also a sign of Allah's Mighty and Supreme Power. No one knows exactly whether the hurricanes that hit America or the earthquake that hit south Asian countries are punishments from Allah or a test for people. Anyway, Muslims should never gloat over people's misfortunes. Rather, they should take admonition from such disasters asking Allah to forgive their sins and protect them against such disasters and evils.

Moreover, these disasters are signs from Allah Almighty. So, we have to be back to Allah and resort to him to alleviate our pains and sufferings.

Allah Almighty knows best.
