| Question |
As-Salamu `Alaykum Sheikh Nur: What exactly is Sufusm? Is it part of Islam?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
The objective of Sufism is zuhd, which entails abandoning what does not bring about benefit in the Hereafter and seeking self-discipline to reach a high level of God-consciousness and piety. This notion has later developed to become an organization with orders and schools. While some of the Sufi practices are based on Islam, others have no Islamic foundations. That is why we say that the objective of Sufism is good, while the practices sometimes are not correct and there have to be a balanced way of practicing Sufism. For more details, please refer to IslamOnline’s fatwa bank and you will find many articles on Sufism.

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum, I have few questions:
1) I take an accounting course. I have to deal with questions relating to interest so can I do interest calculations and make an entry of interest?
2) Can we use medicine containing pig product? If no then what if the doctor recommends it and it cures a person? JazakAllahu khairan. Wassalam`alaykum.
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
As for the first question, you should know that there is a difference between studying interest and the way it is done in a course, practicing it or implementing this concept in life. While the former is allowed, the latter is strictly forbidden in Islam. Therefore, I see no harm in taking a course that involves studying interest calculation methods.
Concerning the second question, I am not sure what you mean by pig. Do you mean gelatin? If yes, then you should know that the issue is controversial among scholars, and the reason for the controversy is the transformation process the gelatin goes through when it is made. This process changes the original substance into a completely different one, so that the new substance takes new features and properties, and therefore the ruling should change once the substance is different. I am more inclined to the permissibility based on the rule of transformation. Therefore, I see no harm in taking such medicine.

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum, Is it right for us to see cartoon pornography, which is about Walt Disney's famous princesses, television characters, or comic book characters in various states of undress and possibly engaged in sexual activity? Thanks!
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
This is an avenue that will most likely lead to worse consequences, and therefore it must be blocked and prevented. Almighty Allah says in the Qur’an: ”Those who love (to see) scandal published broadcast among the Believers, will have a grievous Penalty in this life and in the Hereafter: Allah knows, and ye know not.” (An-Nur: 19)
Therefore, I would say it is unacceptable to watch these pornographic cartoons, and doing so will be counted as a sin.

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum dear scholar, can Muslim eat vitamin that has gelatin ingredients like evening primrose oil and zinc? Jazakum Allah khayran.

| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Yes, it is allowed since the gelatin has undergone a process of chemical transformation that would definitely change its original features and attributes. This process of chemical transformation is identical to the state of istihalah known in Islamic jurisprudence.

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum wa rahmatullah, is it true that the water that touches one private parts for istinja' and then splashes somewhere else will, it make the other parts (where the splashes would be) impure? Jazaka Allahu khairan.
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
We should not make things complicated and try to be rigid on ourselves. Seeking purification through water is very simple and does not need all that hardship. All you need to do is to wash your private parts or the area you are sure about its impurity. So if the water splashed contained impurities, then you know for sure that the area that got contaminated needs to be cleaned. If you didn’t see that, you should not bother yourself too much about it.

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum Sheik Nur: Will I be accountable on the Day of Judgement for having sinful thoughts?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Allah the Most Merciful does not hold people accountable for their inner thoughts unless they are put into effect, at which case the person has carried out the evil thought and put it into practice. But if the evil thought was not practiced, it will be forgiven, and the Muslim is advised to use his time wisely and keep himself always busy with good thoughts. the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, "Allah has forgiven my followers the sinful thoughts that go in their minds unless they are not put into performed or spokend."

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum dear Sheikh, I have another question: Is it permissible for a woman to put make-up on her face and go outside her house like that and of course she is wearing the hijab or headscarf but not putting a veil on her face? Jazaka Allahu khairan.
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Muslim women are forbidden to cause fitna whether by dressing inappropriately or displaying beauty that would attract attention and cause temptations. When Muslim women go outside, they should be careful about their appearances; they should not invite male glances to them, but rather keep their modesty and dignity. So if the make-up is clearly seen and will cause temptation, then it won’t be allowed.

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum Sheikh Nur: As we discussed in our last class, I want to know why the majority of scholars agree that pronouncing talaq (divorce) 3 times in one sitting as final when there is a hadith stating as this is counted as one.
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
The scholarly difference over this issue is based on the different interpretations of Caliph `Umar Ibn Al-Khattab’s decision to count the triple divorce as irrevocable divorce in his time. Some scholars take the decision of `Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, as a discretionary or disciplinary punishment he used in order to restrain an evil practice of people taking the divorce statement as a joke. On the other hand, some other scholars tend to take `Umar’s decision as a ruling to apply in any case of someone pronouncing the divorce three times in one sitting. The majority of scholars prefer the first interpretation.

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum, alhmadullilah for this helpful site and for your time to enlighten us on our deen. I'm a 20 years old female, and since I reached puberty I have been releasing different colored mucus from my private part, vagina. Sometimes its thick and a lot and other times is just strings. I have seen it white, yellow, almost greenish, clear, and couple times it was just like water. I get it every single day and a lot of time I have to change my under pants twice or three times a day. I have heard that my salah and wudu’ are not pure if I have all this coming out from me. I thought it was something normal until I told my mom and she told me she only get some of this when she sleeps with my dad. She is worried about me from the medical point of view. I have seen the doctor and she took some sample for testing and it came back normal, alhmadullilah. They put me on birth control pills, which I'm terrified to take, to control my hormones. Is my salah and wudu’ still clean and insha’Allah being accepted, if I perform them to the best of my ability with this exception? Should I take a shower ever time it comes to me, or at least before each prayer? Is it haram, forbidden, to take the birth control. I'm afraid it might have some consequences when I get marry and want have kids? Please enlighten me with your knowledge may Allah subhana Allah enlighten your path on this Earth and on the Day of Judgment. Ameen.

| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
We ask Allah to give you the best for you in this life and in the Hereafter.
As for the first part of the question, you may simply pray with a fresh wudu’ for each salah. There is no need for taking shower since it is not menstruation bleeding. If you experience some impurity in your clothes, make sure you clean them or you may use a pad as well; both are acceptable.
As for taking birth control bills, it is purely a scientific and medical issue. Therefore you should ask a medical doctor; preferably a Muslim specialist who knows your background and will understand what you are worried about.
