Question What your position on banning niqab in Islamic school because it a sign of extremism?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

I do not agree with the position that niqab is a sign of extremism. Niqab, according to the view of many Islamic scholars is not required; but there are some who consider that a woman should cover her face also. This is a long held position of many prominent jurists and interpreters of the Qur'an. We may disagree with them; but we have not reason to call this "extremism." There are many pious and God fearing Muslim ladies who wear niqab and their lives have nothing to do with extremism, on the contrary they are most peaceful, loving and kind. It is unfortunate that there are some who don’t wear niqab and commit aggression; but they are very few and we should not call everyone who wears niqab as extremist. If this logic, actually illogic, is used then some people will say that all those men who have beard are extremists and all those who wear turbans are extremists etc.

"Guilty by association" is a wrong way and cannot help in curbing extremism from the society. One should look into the real motives of extremism, without going to some un-related appearances.

Question I need my dream interpreted after I prayed salat-ul-istikara. Who can I speak to?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dream interpretation is a special knowledge. There are some people who specialize in this. You should try to find someone who knows how to interpret the dreams. May Allah bless you.

Question We were approached from some Rabbis from Neuteri Karte that is against Zionism requesting access to the mosque and school to speak about the true teachings of Judaism. Some brothers were worried about inviting them to school while others said we should be openminded to listen to other people. What do you think. Should we allow them the same way they allow us to speak about Islam to their audience?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dialogue is always helpful and it opens the ways for understanding and cooperation. When choosing representatives of any faith we should try to choose those who represent the mainline rather than those who say what we like to hear. Many Jewish and Christian groups invite some Muslims to their gathering who are critical of Islam and abuse Muslims. We critcise them and tell them that they should have mainstream Muslims. We should do the same thing. We cannot have real dialogue with any group unless we try to converse with those who represent their main groups. From there the real understanding and common groud will develop.

There is nothing wrong in meeting with the Rabbis of Neuteri Karte but with the understanding that they are a very small group among the Jews and you should not close your doors against others.

Question Assalaamalaikum

What do you mean exactly by Muslim Minorities and what are the issues they face today in this world?
How can we help them? I know our relatives have more rights over us than our other Muslim brothers
in the world who are suffering. But can we take steps to help them too? How? By volunteering any
organization? I am an Indian in USA, would like to know how I can help other Muslims and where?
Any idea of whether our Bosnian brothers need help apart from Palestinians, Iraqis?

Jazaak'Allah Khairan
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

When we talk of Muslim minorities we speak in two ways:

1. The responsibility of Muslims living in countries where the majority of their country people are non-Muslims. How they should live and how should they follow their religion in the midst of a large number of non-Muslims.

2. In some countries minorities and especially Muslims are discriminated against and are mistreated. Those people need help to improve their conditions.
For the first case we have what we call 'the fiqh of minorities' i.e. the religious guidance for Muslims how to live their lives in those situations. In the second case there is a need for social and PR work to provide help and relief to Muslims and to remove misunderstandings and misconceptions about Islam and Muslims from the minds of non-Muslims.

It is the responsibility of Muslims everywhere to be concerned about other Muslims. The Prophet -peace be upon him- said, "Whosoever wakes up in the morning and has no concern for other Muslims, does not belong to them."
You should contact Muslim relief organizations and see how you can help and assist your brothers and sisters in any part of the world. May Allah bless you.

Question Assalaamalaikum

I'm single in my 20s, live on my own in US, far away from my family and I've become very atatched to a couple or more brothers (unrelated) here at the Masjid. I feel very happy on seeing them and I hold their shoulders in a loving way to hug them from behind so as to surprise them and say Salaam and shake hands. Even though they dont take any offence, am I doing anything wrong?
The very thought of leaving this country for home makes me feel sad as I will miss my brothers here(especially 1)(considering I'm very close to my parents.
Even though I feel the brother does not reciprocate the same degree of love towards me, I feel an unconditional love attched with him.
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

People of the same gender can be very friendly and loving to each other without being 'gay'. Be friendly but avoid doing anything that may give a wrong message to others or lead to sinful action and behaviour. May Allah protect you.

Question Assalaamalaikum

I work as an engineer here in USA.
How do I pursue Islamic education?
How do I learn spoken Arabic being in USA?
Please specify any useful resources.

What is the degree of reward for learning to recite Qur'an and Tajweed classes?

Jazak'Allah Khairan
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

May Allah bless you for your concern to increase your knowledge of Islam and learn Arabic and tajweed. Check with your local Islamic center or Muslim student group, you may find some good resources available there. There are also good programs available on line. Islam on Line itself has a lot of resources for learning Islam. For learning Qur'an and tajweed you will certainly need a teacher and personal guide. Communicate with the people at Islam on Line they might be able to give you specific guidance for the area where you live.

Question Assalamuallaikum. I repented to Allah for my past sins but committed them again. what do i do? Do i have to make by fasting for goinhg back on my promise?
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

May Allah forgive you. It can happen that a person repent and then relapse into sin again. Make your sincere repentance, change your surroundings or move from the place where you are getting involved in the sin. It is very good to fast and give some sadaqah (charity) to seek Allah's forgiveness. Continue tawbah and ask Allah to turn your heart to the right direction and remove the influence of shaitan away from you.

Question Is it Ok to go for hajj while you still have mortgage to finish?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Yes, if you have money to pay for your mortgage and also for Hajj then you should go to Hajj and do not delay it. However, if you decide to pay off your mortgage loan now and become debt free, you can do so. If after that you have no money left to make Hajj, then Hajj is not obligatory on you. It is, however, not right to keep money and keep paying the mortgage amount on a monthly basis and not performing Hajj while you can afford to make Hajj.
