Question To get rid of black magic can one go to an amil who is religious, pious person who can help reverse effects of black magic through contacting the jinn and prescribing dhikr?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

If the person who is providing this service is knowledgeable in the Qur'an and Sunnah, and is pious and acts in full conformity with the teachings of Islam, we can definitely make use of his services. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said: "If any one can help his brother, let him do so." To alleviate the suffering of a fellow Muslim/human being is undoubtedly one of the great virtues.

On the other hand, if the person is not observant of the teachings of the Qur'an and Sunnah, and is lax in performance of religious duties and he resorts to dubious methods, then we MUST shun him, for surely, he is a charlatan.

Question I want to know if I can pay 1\4 of real fare as most students do in our country but at the same time it is not rule of our transports that student is allowed to pay 1/4 of the fare. What should I do now?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

If it has been a normal practice ('urf) in your country that students pay a discounted fare, then it is acceptable. Otherwise, it is not.

Question I am a Muslim man living in Australia and I am an Egyptian. I have been learning for 10 years in Australia so as to be a teacher. Now, because I am a MUSLIM they refuse to give me a job and I am working as a worker now and I have an opportunity for revenge from this country (Australia), and that by making a compensation and that I am going to lie and cheat to have this compensation. Is that halal or haram?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

We cannot make a living by cheating and lying. Allah says: "Whoever is conscious of Allah, Allah will appoint a way of relief for him, and shall provide sustenance for him ways that he cannot foresee." (At-Talaq: 2)

So, never despair of Allah's Mercy, but remain steadfast and seek the bounty of Allah by using all allowable means. Allah's promise is indeed true.

Question As-salamu `alaykum. I came to know that there is no relevance for fasting on this particular day. As a practicing Muslim, I would like to ask you that should a Muslim celebrate the `isra’ and mi'raj. If yes, How can we do that?
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

There is no prescribed fasting for the `isra’ and mi'raj or in the month of Rajab since we don't know even the exact date of `isra’. We are not expected to celebrate `isra’ and mi'raj, although we can use the occasion to explain the significance of this important miracle bestowed on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Question As-salamu `alaykum. Excuse me for pasting this question but I am in an embarrassing situation. I have psychological problems and one time I said in my mind : "Oh my Lord cure me and I will not forget (the fact that he will have cured me)" But I know that the human forgets (al-insan yansa) and I'm afraid if I will forget this fact. Is this a valid vow? Can I break it by tawbah and kaffarah?
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

It is important for us to know that Allah Almighty is forgiving and Merciful; He is not definitely vengeful despot ever chasing His servants for their slips and trespasses. Allah knows that human beings are weak and forgetful. That is why He taught us to supplicate to Him:

"Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith." (Al-Baqarah: 286)

But if you have deliberately broken a promise that you made, then expiate it through tawbah and kaffarah. The kaffarah involves fasting 3 days or feeding 10 poor people.

Question We live here in Australia, but we are not happy because it is a racist country. My husband is trying to have a good job but no way because he is a Muslim and now after many years he have an opportunity to take a lump of money from the country but by cheating and lying so we can return to our country but he don’t know whether such an act is halal or not. Thanks.
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

I have already answered this question. This is clearly NOT allowed in Islam. There is always a substitute in what Allah has permitted for us so that we do not need to resort to that which is haram.

Question As-salamu `alaykum. Is it permissible to have sex on the night of `isra’ and mi'raj, and other important nights?
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

There is nothing in the sources to prohibit conjugal relations with your spouse on the night of `isra’ and mi'raj or other important nights.

In Islam, we are not allowed to prohibit anything without sanction of revelation.

Question Dear Sheikh. There is a difference among scholars regarding how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his Lord, Most High, on the night of `isra’ and mi'raj. Then, what do you advise us in this regard?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

This is not one of the articles of faith in Islam. As you should know, the companions themselves have differed on this issue, while some of them holding on to the view that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did see His Lord on the night of `isra’ and mi'raj, others, like `Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), categorically rejecting it.

So, we are not bound to follow any of these views. If it had been integral to faith, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have communicated it as clearly as possible to his ummah.

Question As-salamu `alaykum. It is known that today’s night is al-mi'raj. So it is the night of prayers. Please let me know some du`a, which is more acceptable in Allah's court for betterment of this life and life after death.
Please guide me according to the Islamic point of view.
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

There is nothing in the sources to clearly establish the exact date of the al-mi'raj. There are scholars (as reported from Ibn Abbas) who say that `isra’ and mi'raj took place in the month of Rabi'ul Awwal.

Moreover, there is no authentic practice of observing prayers to celebrate this occasion. It is therefore clearly one of the later innovations.

Question I have a problem which I need help to solve. My problem is that when I use the bathroom I go about the normal routine of washing myself. After I use the bathroom I often notice later that I have some stains on my underpants from this and I am not sure what to do as I am not at home and can not change my underpants.

This is a constant problem and I do my best to clean myself, but it seems as if whatever I do is not good enough. What should I do? Jizaka Allah khyar for advice on this embarrassing question.
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

If this is a persistent problem with you, then you belong to what is known in fiqh Ashab Al'zar or people of valid excuses; in lieu of this, the rigors of the law has been relaxed.

In other words, you simply wash yourself after relieving yourself as best as you can, but do so as close as to the salah you are performing. Then you don't have to worry about what happens after that.

May Allah grant you relief and forgiveness you!

Question It is reported that during the journey of `isra’ and mi'raj the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has seen some people being punished. I would like to know how he has seen them in this case although the Day of Judgment has not come yet?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The only explanation for this is that the time and space was wrapped up for him in an instant, because `isra’ and mi'raj is an experience that transcends the barrier of space and time.

Thank you for your concern and prayers. I am sure that Allah gave us relief because of the many prayers of good brothers and sisters like you.

As for the advice, I would like to say the following:

1. We should educate ourselves continuously in all aspects of Islam, especially by reading and learning from scholars who have a depth of understanding in Islam while being fully aware of the challenges facing the Muslim Ummah. I suggest that you read the works of Sheikh Al-Qaradawi and others.

2. We must ever turn to Allah in dhikr and pray that He grant us steadfastness.

3. Be engaged in constructive works for improving the conditions of Muslims and humanity.

May Allah guide our steps and inspire us to think, speak and do what is right.

Question How do you evaluate the many narrations and hadiths pertaining to the journey of the Mi`raj? Some scholars say that most of them are weak?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

There are various ways and methods of evaluating the reports or transmissions from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The safest method is to combine dirayah (rational understanding) with riwayah (transmission). Some of these principles can be listed as follows:

1. Any thing that contradicts what has been clearly established by the Qur'an must be rejected.

2. Any thing that clearly contradicts sound reason must be rejected if it cannot be explained in any way.

3. We should make a distinction between what which has been reported through mutawatir channels (unbroken chains of narrations) and that which has been reported through ahad (individual channels).

When we look at the traditions of `isra’ and mi'raj, we find that the basic outline and events of `isra’ and mi'raj are in conformity with these principles:

1. They are supported by the evidences of the Qur'an.

2. There is nothing irrational about them.

3. They have been reported by an overwhelming number of companions so that we can rule out any possibility of error concerning the essentials of it.

It is, of course, true that when we approach isolated traditions (ahad) in this regard, we find discrepancies. This fact, however, should not lead us to reject what has been accepted as essentials of `isra’ and mi'raj. These are supported by the Qur'an, Sunnah and ‘Ijma'; so we cannot afford to reject them. They must form as integral aspect of our faith in the revelation given to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

As far as the details are concerned, especially those found in weak or doubtful traditions, we are not bound to accept them, especially if they are in conflict with the above methodology.
