| Question |
Can you tell us the virtues of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicated that there is nothing more beloved by Allah than the good deeds in the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Good deeds means is a broad term which includes prayers, fasting, recitation of the Qur’an, etc.
It is highly recommended for non-pilgrims to fast on the day of `Arafah (the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah).
On the `Eid Day (the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah) or the following two days (11th and 12th) it is Sunnah to sacrifice an animal. Meat could be distributed one third for one’s family, one third for guests, friends and neighbors, and one third of the needy.

| Question |
Few years ago, I bought a car from an auction. It seemed fine until I got on the highway and then it collapsed pretty much. At that time, I swore by Allah that I will never buy a car from an auction again.
The problem is that many years later, I find myself in a business that entails the buying of cars. I usually buy them from people who buy them from auctions and then they add a few $ (more expensive). If I buy them myself from the auction it would be much cheaper but I am just worried about my oath and I fear Allah.
What can I do? Is there anything I can do to undo the oath? What is my legal ruling in Islam if I do buy from an auction now? Can I expiate this?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
You may fast for three days to expiate for that. It is desirable not to swear by Allah under a state of anger and not to swear unnecessarily in general, especially under the state of anger.

What is the age of ‘Udhiyah?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
It should be 6 months for lambs; one year for goat; two years for cows, and 5 years for camels. Some scholars say that if the animal is a bit younger than these ages but it is big enough and meaty, it is Ok. The animal should not be defective.

| Question |
I have two questions:
1. I recently read an article that God never ordered Abraham to sacrifice his son. The justification given was that according to the Qur’an, "God never advocates evil." For a father to slaughter his son would be an evil that cannot be coming from God. It could only come from the Satan. Please clarify which interpretation is correct? Was the sacrifice God's testing or did God save the father and son from Satan's play?
2. What are the etiquettes of praying in a room with mirror. If I am praying in front or beside a mirror, do I need to cover it (like we do with paintings, etc)?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
1. Abraham (Ibrahim) was commanded to sacrifice his son Isma’eel (Ishmael). The command came in the form of a dream, which is a legitimate means of revelation only for Prophets. The command was not evil; it was a test from Allah of the obedience and willingness to sacrifice for His sake by both Ibrahim and his son (both were prophets). Allah never intended that Isma’eel will be sacrificed since the ram substituted for him. As such, that story cannot come from Satan. It is a great and dramatized lesson of submission, obedience, sacrifice, and love of Allah.
2. It is preferable to cover the mirror if it is in the direction of qiblah in order to avoid distraction.

| Question |
Imam al-Qurtubi says that Prophet Abraham was about to sacrifice Ishaq and not Isma’eel? Is this true?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
No, it is not the correct interpretation in my humble view. In surat as-saffat 37, the sequence of events was first the story of sacrifice which runs between verses 100 to 111 following that and beginning with verse 112 was even giving the news of the forthcoming birth of Ishaq, which in a way was a reward for Ibrahim’s willingness to obey Allah.
The Bible itself says that God orders Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his ONLY son, and according to the Bible, the only son of Abraham for 14 years was Ishmael (Isma’eel), not Isaac (Ishaq).

| Question |
As-Salamu `alaykum.
I would like to know whether a woman who is going to offer a sacrifice this `Eid can remove some of the hair on her body keeping in mind that she is a married woman. Would this be considered a sin?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
It is recommended to avoid cutting the hair or trimming the nails for one who plans to offer sacrifice. However, failing to observe that is not a sin, but simply an undesirable act or makruh.

| Question |
Some scholars in North America do not agree that Muslims are allowed to marry more than one wife in North America, because they say it is against the law and they have to abide by the law. How can a Muslim abide by something that contradicts the Qur'an?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
The Qur’an permits but does not require marrying more than one wife. Not doing a permissible act, especially where there are good reasons for that, cannot be called “contradiction with the Qur’an” unless the person believes that what is permissible in the Qur’an has turned into haram in the religious meaning.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us that we should honor our contracts except for one that turns that which is halal into that which is haram or the reverse. Failing to make use of a permissible thing is not the same as making it haram.
Muslims who accepted to immigrate or to be a citizen of another country are obligated to respect or to abide by the law with the condition stated above.

| Question |
Can a Muslim work in a shop selling alcohol?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
The hadith about intoxicants includes ten categories including the one who handles alcohol. If you can make arrangements with your employer or fellow non-Muslim employees and then you will only handle the permissible items, as long as the Muslim worker is not the shop owner then you can work in that shop as long as the Muslim worker is not the shop owner.

| Question |
On more than one occasion, I have seen a friend of mine eating with and hugging a particular girl in public. Should I question him regarding this?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Do you think that “questioning” is really conducive to communication? What is needed is to befriend that brother, try to invite him to good company, and help him through this difficult stage with gentleness and love, but also in truth.

| Question |
Could please give me the reference of a hadith which is not relevant to the topic. Where can I get the Arabic version of the hadith where the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the women would prostrate to their husbands if a person had to prostrate to another human being? Give me the context of the hadith too.
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
1. Prostrations are of two types : 1) for the purpose of worship, and that is not permissible except for Allah Almighty.
2. Prostration for respect such as the command of Allah to Iblis to prostrate to Adam and the prostration of the family prophet Yusuf to him (surah 12).
The hadith obviously speaks about the second type.
The Prophet did not even say that women should prostrate to their husbands, but he only said “law” which can be translated in “if I were…”.
The context of the hadith, as the hadith states, is to exhort wives to be respectful to their husbands since the hadith says “because of his great claim over her.”
The hadith should also be taken not only in its own context, but also in the context of other verses and hadiths, some of which also emphasize and underline the importance of husbands being kind and respectful to their wives. It is a reciprocal matter, not a one-way street.

| Question |
If a person is offering a sacrifice through a charity organization and doesn't know when his lamb is going to be sacrificed, when can the person cut his hair and nails? Can he do that right after the `Eid prayer?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Doing this is not a must and is not intended to impose undue difficulty or inconvenience. However, if you feel better, you may delay cutting hair and nails until the end of the third day of the `Eid, which is the deadline for sacrifice. If you are not sure about the time zone, you may wait for one more day.

| Question |
Please explain the significance for not cutting hairs and nails until a person has offered the sacrifice. Is this practice followed only for the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. Or is it done during any other occasions as well?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
It is done only in the ten days of Dhul Hijjah, so as to share with the pilgrims some of the restrictions they go through during hajj. Also, not all restrictions on pilgrims are to be shared, such as wearing the ihram attire or abstaining from intimate matrimonial relations.
