Question As-Salamu'alykum, may I fast, if I live together with a man and we are not married yet?
Answer
Wa'alykum assalamu warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Fasting is an obligation on every Muslim that is required to fast. Your are required to fast whether you are committing a sin or not because one sin does not justify the commission of another sin. However, the type of life you are living is absolutely against Islam, and therefore it is forbidden. You ought to repent sincerely to Allah in the month of Ramadan, correct your action, get married, and live a pure, righteous life that draws you near to Allah.

Question As-Salamu alaykum! My friend recently convrted to Islam, secretly from her parents, since they are very prejudiced towards Islam. She is going to fast, but she asks if she can lie her parents that she is on diet and thus not eating at the daytime? Also, is it a big sin that she is currently not wearing hijab?
Answer
Wa'alykum assalamu warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

I understand the difficulty that the sister might be going through, and I ask Allah to strengthen her heart to Islam and make things easy for her.

With regard to fasting, she has the right to hide it from her parents. If she is saying she is on diet, meaning she is on fasting, that is Ok. She should however, start to educate her parents on other faiths so that she introduces them to the next stage, which is to accept her conversion.

As for hijab, it is an Islamic obligation that is required from every sister. However, if she is still in the process of learning about faith, practicing it gradually, then hijab can be postponed a little bit until the fundamentals of faith are established.

Question If I slept and did woke up late in the morning of Ramadan, what should I do?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

You should simply continue fasting in this case by abstaining from eating and drinking. As for the intention, if you intend the first night in Ramadan or in the preceding night, that should suffice.

Question Dear Sheikh, I am in the military and currently deployed to Iraq. I have been deployed for multiple months. I wondered if this qualified me as a traveler and if I should fast or not.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Fasting can be broken during travelling. As soon as the person reaches his or her destination, he or she is supposed to fast. As for shortening/combining prayers, it can be done for the first three days of travel according to Maliki School or 15 days according to Shafie School.

Question People perform ‘umrah from mosque ‘Aisha, is it a valid ‘umrah or not, because I was told by one of scholar in Madina mosque that it was a special case so it is allowed for women with that problem. Please explain.
Answer Wa'alykum assalamu warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

It is recommended for someone performing one ‘umrah at one time. However, in certain situations, like people traveling overseas and incurring a lot of costs that they can hardly afford, it is understood how they want to repeat the ‘umrah in the same trip. The ‘umrah itself is valid, although it is not recommended.

Question Please if you can help me I’m quite distressed at the moment. My husband and I married very young, during the first years of marriage we used to have a lot of violent arguments where he would be extremely angry and beat me and tell me he doesn't want me in his life. On one occasion when he was very angry he shouted talaq 3 times, and I said 'u didn’t mean that' and he shouted he did and slammed the door. We found out a few years later, after we started controlling our tempers that this all could constitute a divorce. I asked my husband if in his heart he wanted to divorce me he said he doesn’t remember anything because he was angry and it was all such a long time ago. I’m pregnant with my first child and I’m so worried our lives will be destroyed by this. Please help me.
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

I ask Allah to give you comfort and make things easy for you. I would like to answer your question in the following points:

1. Anger must be controlled as it may have untold circumstances. Your husband should seek professional counseling or take anger management lessons.

2. If divorce occurs at the time of such anger that impairs someone’s understanding completely to the point that he does not distinguish between right and wrong, it does not count. Imam Ibn Taymiyyah also argues that divorce pronounced during extreme anger is not also valid.

3. If divorce is pronounced three times, it counts only as one divorce.

Based on the abovementioned rules, it is advised that you see a qualified local imam whereby he could asses the whole situation and suggests some practical solutions for you.

Question If husband and wife has their relation (intercourse) and over slept till fajr time can they fast that day?
Answer Wa'alykum assalamu warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, would sometimes have intimacy with his wives and make ghusl after fajr. Therefore, it is allowed in this case that they simply take a shower after fajr.
