Question I live with my parents they earn lively hoods from unlawful means. I earn by means of lawful activities, I hand over the earned amount to my father who invests the whole amount on family needs. My question is: can I use the house, food etc. of family? What is ruling of Islam that governs me? In case of India, what are measures would a Muslim take to prevent himself and family from Riba interest?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

It really depends on what kind of unlawfulness of income you refer to. If it is unlawful with shame such as extortion of money from others or price of adultery, it is better then to avoid eating from that kind of income. But if it is unlawful with no shame such as working in a bank, it may not be Haram at all (because it depends on what kind of job in a bank) but even if it is determined that it is Haram, the sin will belong to the income earner but not to you and it is permissible for you to benefit from whatever spending (including housing) your parents put in the house.

You avoid interest by avoiding borrowing from banks except for necessity and by investing in Shari'ah compliant mutual funds, and also by doing direct business personally or through partners and associates

Question I am a qualified accountant working as practicing auditor. Some of my clients are running hotel business and part of the business they are doing is selling alcohol. What is the religious ruling in serving these clients as auditors and consultancy?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

If the alcohol makes a miner part of the hotel business, it is not Haram to audit their accounts. You may consider giving some special Sadaqah for the part of the auditing income that relates to alcohol. If it is a major part, it seems to me that it is then included among the ten prohibited functions in alcohol.

If you did in the past any work for the second category, I also recommend purification.

Question Dear sheikh, there are Islamic banks in Egypt, such as Faisal bank. However, some friends told me that it is not Islamic as they have to follow the same instructions given by the central bank of Egypt just as other riba-based banks. Is this right? Should I not deposit my money there?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

No, that is incorrect and you may deposit in the Islamic banks in Egypt. This is a typical propaganda that is rumored by enemies of Islamic banking. Central banks give instructions to Islamic banks and they follow them but they do not give them any instructions that violate Shari'ah. These banks are licensed to do Islamic banking and the central bank supervises them according to their license.

Question Assalamu Alaik, sheikh,

I have been without a job for 8 months. Recently, there is a stock broker that was offering internship with a little pay. They deal in buying and selling of shares on behalf of individuals and firms without distinguishing the type of business i.e. alcohol brewing companies, conventional banks.

I have a family that depends on me, would it be right for me to take this job temporarily until I get a halal job?

If you can avoid doing transactions of non-permissible shares and on bonds, it is permissible to take this job. A share that is not permissible to buy is also not permissible to broker. With more effort, Allah will find you a suitable job.

Question Assalamu Alaikum brother, we have garment factories in Sri Lanka. We import material from abroad and sell locally. My question is that we don't show proper accounts to tax collectors because if we do we will not make much profit and also when importing material from abroad we don't declare the exact quantity and bribe the custom officers. Some people in Sri Lanka have spread the fatwa saying that since Sri Lanka is Kufr country (meaning not a Muslim country) we can do injustice with the government. Is it ok, if we do not deal justly like not declaring and doing tax corruption? Please advise me on this. Jazakallah khair

Lying and bribery are definitely forbidden in our Shari'ah regardless of with whom you deal or where you live.

Violation of tax laws and custom laws in any country is permissible provided that one does not lie, bribe, do any shameful action or endanger life or property of any person including yourself. Yet, you should realize that when you violate a tax or custom law you expose yourself to possible penalty. Issuance of such laws that regulate civil matter in any society is permissible, violating them does not make any Shari'ah issue, imposing fines or other penalties for them is also permissible.
