Question As-Salamu `alaykum. Some people comment on a hadith which says that a woman can’t sit down with other non-mahram man and other mahram man, what hadith is this?
Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

If I understand your question correctly, it is the one which states, "No man can be isolated with a woman without Devil joining them as a third companion." This is an authentic hadith.

Question Respected scholar, how long can we take for Iftar before we pray the Maghreb salah? We generally take about 15 minutes for Iftar before we pray the Maghreb salah. Is this ok or is it better to Pray the Salah earlier. Also, normally how long do we have to pray the Maghreb salah. I have been told that we can pray the Maghreb salah up to about one hour after the Azan for Maghreb.
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The time of Maghrib Salah is indeed rather short as compared to times of prayers such as Zuhr, `Asr and `Isha’. This is what we can safely conclude from a close study of Sunnah; there is no disagreement on this issue among the jurists. Therefore, one should not take so much liberty with the time of Maghrib as you have indicated.

The safest method is to break the fast with a few dates and water/drinks or brief snacks and postpone dinner until after the Prayer. This is the sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); we are best advised to stick to it, rather than delaying Maghrib indefinitely.

Mind you there are scholars such as Imam Shafi`i who are of the opinion that the time of Maghrib salah is rather limited; it is only sufficient enough to perform wudhu, perform good five rak'ahs: three rak'as of fard and two rak'ahs of sunnah.

Therefore, we are best advised to stick to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mentioned above.

May Allah keep us on the straight path-aameen.

Question What is the significance of giving fitra?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Fitra or Zakat al-fitr as stated in the hadith has been "prescribed as a means of purifying the fasting person from blemishes and stains (in his fast) and as a meal for the poor (on the day of `Eid)."

In other words, it is intended to expiate and make up for our deficiencies in our fasts, while providing an opportunity for allowing the poor to celebrate `Eid al-Fitr appropriately.

Based on the explicit orders of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it has been considered as an obligatory duty; it must be given by every adult Muslim who has something above and beyond his basic needs; he must give the same not only on behalf of himself but also on behalf of his wife and children who are not independent as well as his parents and sisters who are under his care.

It should be given before Eid Salah; it is highly recommended to give it earlier so that the poor can make use of it in advance to prepare for the `Eid Feast.

Question As-Salamu `alaykum.

We, Muslims, are supposed to pay the zakat al fitr as the Ramadan is about to over. Up to know even though I have my own income my parents pay it for me. Now I live in different country where the common traditional food is different; is it still acceptable if they pay it for me or is there anything that they should modify?

Jazaakumullahu khayr
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

If you are an adult then it is your duty to pay on behalf of yourself, especially if you have your own income. This the ideal way; therefore, tell your parents that you will be paying it yourself, and they need not bother about it.

Moreover, since you are living in another country, you are governed by the food habits of the country of residence. In other words, the calculation of how much and what to give is based on the standards of your new place of residence, rather than your country of birth.

Having said this, however, I must add: You are allowed to pay in cash, which is better especially in cities and towns where people can not make use of grains readily.

Question How can we feel happy at this `Eid while the calamities in the Ummah are increasing and our brothers and sisters everywhere are humiliated?

Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

These are times Muslims all over the world need to share the pain and suffering of their brothers and sisters in various parts of the world—especially Iraq and Palestine—where they are being systematically exterminated. We ought to share their pain and come to their help morally and financially and do whatever we can to relieve their pain and suffering. Let this be the firm resolution of every Muslim. For as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "He/she who does not care for the suffering of fellow Muslims is not one of them!"

Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

According to many scholars, you are allowed to use such creams for external use only--especially if you don't have substitutes.

Question As-Salamu `alaykum, Sheikh and thank you for doing this!

My question is that I have been diagnosed with PCOS which is a precursor for Type2 diabetes and therefore can't fast. I just need to confirm if the kafara for that is feeding ONE fasting person? I am not earning right now, but inshAllah will be doing by next year, can I help break the fast for one person starting from next year then? Not sure how that works.

Thank you for your help!
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

You should feed one poor person for each of the day of fast you have missed; it can be roughly calculated as the cost of a full meal according to the standards of the country you are living. In Canada it is estimated to be approximately seven dollars.

Therefore, you should calculate the required amount in your case and give it away to the poor as soon as you can afford to do so.

Question This isn’t anything to do with zakah, but would appreciate your help anyway!

Is tahajjud 8 rak`ahs or 6?

I have always prayed 8 but a friend of mine told me that it’s actually 6. What is the correct number of rak`ahs for tahajud and also do you do salam at the end of every 2 rak`ahs?
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

There is no hard and fast rule about the precise number of rak'ahs of tahajjud. It is simply a nafl prayer; when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about it he said, "Pray it in two's and two's; when you fear the dawn approaching, close it off with witr, even if it be one rak'ah."

Therefore, you are allowed to pray twenty, twelve, or eight or six or four.

Question Sorry to come again. Ok I can pay it and ready with it but I am a guest to the country and besides the rareness of the Muslim population here those I met have better living standard. I tried to send the money but they asked me some criteria which I could not fulfill before the `Eid. In the circumstances you have described, your parents or someone else can pay on your behalf, and you can pay them back later when you can. In this way, you will have fulfilled your religious duty.

May Allah accept our fasts and charities-aameen.

Question
As-Salamu `Alaykum, may Allah accept your effort, dear scholar. My son lives with me in the same house. However, he works and gets salary. With the 'Eid approaching, I am to give Zakat Al-Fitr for myself and him. But my son is afraid that he himself should give Zakat Al-Fitr from his own money. I insisted to spend the Zakah from my money but he refused that. He wants to give the Zakah from his own money, since he works and gets salary. What is your comment? Which of us should give the Zakah?

Answer
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

Your son is right; he is the one who should be giving zakatul fitr on behalf of himself, and not you. So let him do it on his own; that is the ideal way. May Allah bless both of you for your zeal to practise Islam - Ameen.

Question As-Salamu `alaykum.

I would like to know that I did not give zakah last year. It’s my first time giving zakah this year. Will this include all income in my account for four years or just this years income?

Thank you.
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

If you did not give zakah in the previous years, then you must calculate zakah for all of them accordingly. For that is unpaid debt which you must clear as soon as possible. In other words, it is not enough for you to pay zakah for this year only.

Therefore, you should calculate how much you had saved each of the previous year and pay zakah accordingly. If after paying for previous years, you still have some amount saved in your account, then you must pay for it as well at the end of the year.

Question
What is zakah?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Zakah literally means purification; technically it is used for compulsory charity prescribed in Islam. There are two types of charities, one is charity that is due on one's wealth; a person who has something above and beyond his expenses for himself and his family saved must give charity to the poor at the rate of 2.5 of the net saving. This is one of the five major pillars of Islam. It is to be paid every year.

The second type of zakah is called zakat al-fitr, which is obligatory on every adult person who has something to give after taking out his expenses for himself and his family on the day of `Eid. Zakat al-fitr is estimated to be around seven Canadian dollars, but if you live in another place, then you must consult the Islamic center to determine the precise calculation of the same in the currency of your country of residence.

Question
Dear brother in Islam, I want to know about salat tsabehl; would you please explain it to me?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Salatul tasbih is not a very authentic form of salah as many scholars have pointed out. It was unknown to the four imams as we find no mention of it by anyone of them. Therefore, you are better of by sticking to the well known sunnah prayers such as istikharah, salatul hajah, etc.

Question I am pregnant in the eight month and I’m wondering if there should be zakat paid for the unborn child.

Jazak Allah khair
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

There is no zakah to be paid on behalf of the unborn child unless the child is born before the sun set of the last day of Ramadan.

Question
Assalamu `alaykum. My question is that it is hard for me to fast but I fast during Ramadan. The problem is I always get a bad headache when am not eating the whole day, so last Ramadan, I missed fasting about 6 days then I repaid 5 and couldn't fast one day left until now. What do I do now for the day which I didn't fast? Will I get sins? please reply me.
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

You must make up for the fast you have missed; for it is a debt that you owe to Allah; if your medical condition does not allow you to fast then you must pay fidyah (compensation). It is paying the cost of one full meal for a poor person for each day of fast you have missed.
