| Question |
Dear Sheikh, As-Salamu `alaykum!
What do you say regarding women who wear niqab (face-cover) in Hajj? Should she uncover her face?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Uncovering the face is part of the ihram of woman; she can, however, cover it if she is coming directly face-to-ace with men and uncover the same as soon as she has passed them. But if she were to cover her face for any other reasons then she has made a breach of the ihram restrictions.

| Question |
We know that the Prophet performed Hajj only one time in his life. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take from me your practices of Hajj". So, how could the Companions know the practicing of Hajj before the (farewell) Hajj of the Prophet?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Hajj was a practice inherited by the Arabs from their forefathers Ibrahim and Isma`il, the Messengers of Allah (peace be upon them all). So, the Muslims were continuing the legacy as they had inherited it; the only difference was they were told to stay away from those pagan rituals and practices which had been introduced by the pagan Arabs into this important institution of Abrahamic monotheism.
As Imam Shah Waliullah has pointed out in his most famous work, Hujjat Allah al-Balighah, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) allowed the Abrahamic legacy to continue; he only stripped it of the accretions innovated by the pagans which ran counter to the pristine concept of Tawhid (belief in the Oneness of Allah).

| Question |
As-Salamu `alaykum! What do you say on pilgrims who occupy their minds with gifts and other worldly concerns during the rituals of Hajj?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Hajj, in order to be virtuous and rewarding, must be done with utter devotion and concentration as far as possible; so those who occupy themselves with such mundane frivolities are losing the great rewards; they would certainly be invalidating their Hajj, if these become their predominant concern and purpose in undertaking the journey.
Allah says, "They have been ordered only to worship Allah, making submission solely for His sake." May Allah help us all to persevere in His worship - Ameen.

| Question |
As-Salamu `alaykum! What is the Sunnah for fasting during Hajj for people who are not performing Hajj? Jazaka Allah Khayr.
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
It is recommended for those who are not performing Hajj to fast the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that fasting during these days is one of the most meritorious acts in the sight of Allah.
If a person cannot fast the entire nine days of Dhul-Hijjah, he may at least fast the Day of `Arafah, which falls on the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah; it is reported that fasting on the Day of `Arafah, for those who are not performing Hajj, will expiate their sins, both past and present.

| Question |
I know that the general lottery is haram, though in Toronto there is a charity fund for cancer research at a local hospital and they have an annual type of lottery where the ticket each person buys is donated straight to cancer research. Each doner, in turn, gets a number of which may be picked later for prizes. Is this halal since the intention is to fund this research?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
One of the important principles of Islam is that goal does not justify the means; so since lottery in any form is haram for it is considered gambling, whether it is done for reasons of personal profit or charitable causes, it is still considered as haram. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If anyone acquires wealth through unlawful sources and donates it, such a donation will be a source of damnation for him on the day of Judgment!"

| Question |
As-Salamu `alaykum Sheikh! I have recently reverted to Islam Al-Hamduliah and my question is if I am uncircumcised is it obligatory for me to be circumcised before I can perform Hajj or `Umrah? Will my Hajj or `Umrah be accepted if I perform it uncircumcised and will I receive less blessing and rewards from Allah?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Although circumcision is an important ritual of Islam, barring any physical excuses, it is not something on which the validity of your Hajj or `Umrah or any of the other pillars of Islam are dependent on.
In other words, your Hajj and `Umrah are considered valid and acceptable even if you were uncircumcised. May Allah accept your Hajj and `Umrah!

I would just like to clarify a supposed historical fact regarding the Hijab, as outlined in a recent UK channel 4 documentary entitled 'Islam Unveiled'. It is supposed that the Hijab was never worn by Muslim women until around 3 generations after the Prophet's death (when Muslims became acquainted with Byzantine dress styles). Is this true? Jazakullah khayran
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Islamic beliefs and practices are based on the infallible sources of the Qur'an and the authentic Hadith. They are not subject to speculations of agnostics who are weaving imaginary theories sitting in their ivory towers. If our beliefs and practices were left to such figments of human imaginations, then we would have to alter our beliefs and practices everyday, according to the whims and fancies of each and every eccentric researcher.
So, I advise you to learn your religion from the right sources, and not to be carried away by such theories, which are simply products of whisperings of Shaytan, the outcast.

Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum! Is it permissible to throw sandals or wood or big rocks instead of the pebbles. Jazakum Allah khayran.
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
For pelting or ramy to be valid it must be done by pebbles or stones like chick peas or the like; it is not sufficient to through sandals or pieces or wood or big rocks. If therefore any one happened to do these, he/she must repeat the same or expiate for the mistake by offering sacrifice.

| Question |
How does a man wear his ihram garment? For example, can a guy wear underwear and how can he keep his bottom half from falling down? Do the arms need to be covered or bare - the top garment just thrown over the shoulders? Can the material be thick and the two pieces of material be large or is there some standard size? Thanks for your help.
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Ihram for males consists of two pieces of white clothes that are not transparent; he can tie them tight by means of belts or strings. He is not allowed to wear underwear unless there is a medical necessity. The ihram pieces can be kept in their place by fastening them tight or by use of belt in such a way that they do not fall off easily.
The upper part of the ihram covers the shoulders and the arms, while the lower part covers from navel to the knee.
Ihram pieces can be thick and large in size, but they should not excessively large to touch the ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us from wearing clothes that touch the ground.
In case of females, they can wear any clothes so long as they are not transparent or excessively colorful and attractive. They are however to uncover their face and hands while in ihram.

| Question |
As-Salamu `alaykum wa Rahamtu Allah wa Barakatuh!
I would like to know if it is permissible for Shi`a and Ahmadis to do Hajj.
Salam
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Shi`ah are considered Muslims, and they have been allowed to perform Hajj throughout centuries by the consensus of Muslims.
If anyone denies the finality of the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he is not considered a Muslim; so an Ahmadi should ask himself where he stands in regards to this fundamental tenet of Islamic faith; if he does accept this tenet, then he is called a Muslim; if he does not, then he is out of the fold of Islam, no matter what name he prefers to call himself with.
May Allah keep us steadfast on the straight path- Ameen.

Can I cover my face in the state of ihram?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
You are not allowed to cover your face in ihram unless you are coming directly face-to-face with men; in which case, you may do so, but you must uncover it as soon as you have passed the men directly coming your way.

| Question |
As-Slamu `alaykum! The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not take my grave as a place of worship (as the Christians and Sabians do ). On Hajj and `Umrah everyone like to pray on his grave, isn't that a BIG haram?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
We are not allowed to beseech favours from anyone other than Allah, so, if anyone does so, while visiting the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he is committing an act of shirk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not turn my grave into an idol to be worshipped."
But if a person were simply making ziyarah (a visit) and greeting the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the two companions buried beside him, without indulging in any of such acts, he/she is doing a meritorious act. We are to love the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) more than we love our parents and children and all of mankind; won't you like to visit the grave of your father or mother after their death?
