Question This year I want so much with my whole heart to do i`tikaf. It will not be possible for me to do it during the whole 10 days. What other options are available for me. I have heard that some people just do it during night. I have also heard some people do it only on weekend. Or some people do it on the last 3 nights. No doubt that doing it for all 10 days has the most value and you will receive the most reward, and I have been told that it is a Sunnah.

Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

You just do as many days as you can, and Allah Almighty will reward you for your good intention.

Question As-Salamu `alaikum. Ramadan Mubarak!

I am gathering information about i`tikaf, because I am intending to perform i`tikaf this weekend. This will be my first time. However, I am getting so many conflicting viewpoints, I trust this website the most, and will really appreciate your viewpoint.

One lady in our community who is regarded as very learned and told me that during i`tikaf I can take care of my son and that I can even cook dinner. This is in response to my concern that for 2-3 hours each weekday there will be no one available to watch my son. So I was asking her what could I do? Another lady who is also very learned told me no I can not as I have to stay in one room and I can not talk with anyone, and that if God forbid if accidentally my son fell or got hurt and if I was to step out of the room for even to go pick him up and or see to his injuries. I would have broken my i`tikaf and I would incur sin for doing that. What do you think?
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

I`tikaf is a Sunnah and taking care of you sun is mandatory, so you can not leave the mandatory for the Sunnah, if you can make i`tikaf without ignoring your son it will be good. Otherwise, you should take care of your son as this should take priority.

Question As-salamu `alaikum. `Eid Mubrak in advance!

What can a person do during i`tikaf? Must he only perform prayers and read Qur'an ? Can they listen to the Qur'an on CD of computer, can they read tafseer or visit websites like this one to get more Islamic knowledge. Can I listen or watch an Islamic lecture on television or on CD player? Can I listen to Hamza Yusuf or Yusuf Estes lectures?
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

What you can do is to read Qur'an, make du`a, pray, read tafseer, and you can listen to the Qur'an or any Islamic lectures, or anything that has to do with remembering Allah Almighty, but it is better to pray, make du`a.

Question As-salamu `alaikum. I have heard that one can make intention for i`tikaf for anytime they enter into some sort of `ibadat. Like when you enter the Mosque for Tarawih then you can make intention for i`tikaf for the duration of the i`tikaf. Also, if you attend an Islamic lecture you can make intention for i`tikaf for the duration of the i`tikaf. But isn’t i`tikaf supposed to be done in isolation while not speaking to anyone else? In a lecture you are conversing with others about Islamic topics. And in Tarawih you are surrounded by so many people and there is so much noise, and there are announcement being made during the intervals. How can you get credit for i`tikaf?
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

I`tikaf can be done by yourself, or by group of people, so if you do it by group then you can perform prayer together, and one can give talk, and make du`a, or discuss different topics related to Islam. I`tikaf can be even for one hour or more and it will depend on the time and the ability of the person.

Question A friend told me that reciting one thousand times of ayat al-Kursi in one night would make all supplications accepted by Allah. Is there any evidence of this in Islam ? What about the acceptance by Allah of supplications on Laylat al-Qadr? Thanks.
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

There is nothing in the sources which prove what you said. However, the Muslim can make du`a, and Allah will accept his/her du`a, if he/she is very good person fearing Allah, then Allah will accept his supplication, in sha' Allah.

Question Everyone knows and has been told that we should search for the night of Qadr. We all have been told that on the night of Qadr one will receive whatever they pray for. Is that for the prayers you make through out that particular night or is that a moment in that night whatever you should be happen to be praying for?

Also they say that any `ibadat performed during that night will have the effect more than those `ibadat done on any other night. Like if you pray that prayer will count equivalent to 1000 prayers. What if at that time you happen to talk to someone about Islam like to your child? They say that caring for your children is also `ibadat, what if during that moment your child is sick and you are caring for him will receive much more good deeds, will that also be counted like 1000 `ibadat?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said: "Whoever stands (in prayer) during the night of al-Qadar with faith and expecting reward (from Allah), he will be forgiven for his previous sins"

Also he (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said: "The night of al-Qadar occurs during the last ten (nights) whoever stands for them (in prayer) seeking their reward, then indeed Allah will forgive his previous sins and his latter sins. It is an odd night: the ninth or the seventh or the fifth or the third or the last night of Ramadan."

Question I have an unrelated question to the topic but I have been trying to ask this question for a while but haven't got the answer.

Before the start of Ramadan, I knew I had to travel on a certain date so I fasted before Ramdan. Is that fast valid or should be done after the end of Ramdan?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The days you fast before the month of Ramadan will count for as voluntary fasting, and if you missed any day during the month of Ramadan then after the end you will need to fast the days you missed.

Question During i`tikaf can I read Islamic material on the computer. When you turn on computer other stuff comes on and pictures and news about other things in the world also come into view, will that affect the I`tikaf, or should I just ignore and get to the material I need?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The best is to pray, and make du`a, and read the Qur`an, and read tafsseer books as that will the best.

Question I would like just to say excellent website, and very nice articles, jazakum Allah khairan.

My question is about Lailat Al-Qadr. what is exactly decided on Lailat Al Qadr? Can our supplications have effect on what will be written for us on that particular night? Also, is there any specific supplications we should make on this blessed night?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Jazakum Allah khairan. The du`a during the Lailat Al-Qadar will affect our destiny, because we do not what Allah has is written for us, but we make du`a asking Allah for guidance, and good life, and the best du`a is that person can say what the Prophet Muhammad said: "Say O Allah You are forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me."

Question I have heard different opinions regarding women and how and where they can do i`tikaf. Somewhere, I have seen it written that it is also wajib for women to do i`tikaf in the Mosque. In other places I have seen that it is better for women do it at home. Please help me understand.
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The best place for woman to do i`tikaf is her house, and it is not wajib or obligatory upon her to do it in the Masjid, because the purpose of i`tikaf is to remember Allah, and this can happen anywhere the woman can do it. As you know it is very hard for some woman to do i`tikaf in the Masjid.

Question Can we make the last ten days of Ramadan a holiday in the Muslim countries (to make i'tikaf easier to perform)?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

No , but you can make i'tikaf without having holiday, but it will be good to have some days as holiday so the person can make the i'tikaf and at the same time have very good rest, but if the i'tikaf will lead the person to be lazy or missing the Fajr Prayer then it is better to perform the obligatory prayer than the Sunnah.

Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

The best supplication is what the Prophet Muhammad stated in his hadith which reads: "Say O Allah, You are forgiving and love forgiveness so forgive me."

Question Peace Muslim Ahmed,

I am wondering why Muslims in general concern themselves with the last 10 days of Ramadan. I read that there is a night or time where all persons' sins can be forgiven or it is worth 1000 days of prayer. The thing is, can't you just pray to God and ask for forgiveness? Anyway, I guess have a good Ramadan.
Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Muslims do so because they follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammd (peace and blessings be upon him). `Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is reported to have stated, "When the last ten days of Ramadan began, Allah's Messenger(peace and blessings be upon him) gets himself preoccupied with the worship of Allah, stayed awake at night and awakened his family."

Also `Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to engage in private devotions in the Mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan till Allah Who is Great and Glorious took his soul (i.e. to His Mercy. This means that he continued to this practice after his death.
