Question I would like to know if it is permitted in Islam to keep the fact that one is Muslim a secret in order to protect oneself knowing that one's life is in danger if one admits to non-Muslims that he is a Muslim.
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"If one's life is in real danger, according to the Qur'an, we are allowed to hide our Islam but it must be a clear case of danger to life. Allah Almighty says: "Except him who is under compulsion (to conceal his faith) while their heart is full of faith." (An-Nahl: 106)

Based on this, under extreme danger to one's life, one may confess that he is not a Muslim. However, it is preferred to admit and confess one's Islam and face the consequences, whatever they may be."

Question I am 19 year old Indian girl staying in Canada. I was brought up in a very traditional family, so I'm definitely not the kind who would go out with guys and party. I don't even talk to the guys in my class. My problem is that I don't get along with anyone here in Canada; I don't even get along with most of the Muslim girls my age because they're all very fashionable and they're always out with guys (which would make me uncomfortable, if I did it).

I really don't have friends here (except one, who's exactly like me and my family). I want to move back to India as soon as I complete my studies because I know I'll get along with the people there. But my parents want me to stay in Canada forever, and I would hate to do that? What do you think I should do about this? Also, I have recently developed an interest in Islam and I've also started to pray as much as I can (I didn't pray at all before)....now. I've developed so much interest in Islam that I want to start covering my head when I go out. But my parents won't let me because they say that "if you cover your head, everyone will look at you and we don't want people to be staring at you."

Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"I must congratulate you for your zeal to practice Islam. But I am afraid that you are rushing to make judgment negatively of all Muslim women in Canada. I am sure if you look more closely, you will find many girls who are firm in their faith, who would shun such habits such as dating and mingling with boys indiscriminately. Perhaps you should have been focusing too much on one area only; look else where in the city where Muslims live. You can also ask people.

Conferences such as those held by ISNA, Canada, may provide you with opportunities to get to know Muslim girls who are serious and committed.

Therefore, it is not necessary for you to go to India to practice Islam. You should remember that India was a non-Muslim country before Muslims came and settled down there. By the same logic, Muslims who settled down here can make this society an Islamic one if they have the sincerity and dedication. So, it is not necessary to go to India to practice Islam. In Islam, you are not allowed to hate people. We are allowed only to hate diseases in people.
If your parents want you to stay here, it is your Islamic duty to stay here.
As for covering your head, please try to be gentle with your parents and persuade them that you don't mean to rebel against them but you wish to be faithful to Allah's Orders, which is for everybody's benefit. Continue to be patient in your struggle while always being gentle and polite with your parents. Above all, ask Allah for guidance and strength."

Question As-salamu `alaykum, I am currently receiving my income from disable agency group and I am not working now. I do not have anyone to support me. Is it possible to continue getting this money until I become financially independent or Allah opens a way for me?
Answer Wa`alaykum As-Salaamu Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"If you fulfill the conditions of disability, and therefore, are paid from the funds from this agency group, definitely you are allowed to use the same. In this case, it is not considered haram for you, but as soon as you are financially independent or you have another source of income, you should discontinue."

Question As-Salamu `Alaykum. Brother, I live in Calgary, Canada where there are Mosques and everything, and I have to go everyday and every morning to work 100 km away and come back to Calgary at evening. My question is: how do I pray the Friday prayer because there is no Mosque 100 km away where I work. Thanks.
Answer Wa`alaykum As-Salaamu Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"If there is no Muslim community in your area and you are the only person then the Friday prayer is not obligatory on you. However, if there is a minimum 3 people, you should organize the jumu`ah."

Question I have narcolepsy (a serious medical disorder which is principally characterized by a permanent and overwhelming feeling of sleepiness and fatigue). I have to take medication on daily basis for the rest of my life. I have heard contradicting opinions on whether or not I am obligated to fast while taking medicine. Insha Allah, I plan on giving sadaqah for not fasting most of the days during this Ramadan (some days when I didn't have to go to school, or drive, I fasted but still took my medicine). Please let me know what I am supposed to do. May Allah reward you for all you do.
Answer In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"If you are suffering from this chronic disease and, you are required to take medication, on a daily basis especially during the hours of the day, then you are exempted from fasting. Allah says: "Those who cannot fast (because of chronic disease or old age), they must pay ransom by feeding a poor person." (Al-Baqarah: 185)

Based on this, you must feed a poor person for everyday of Ramadan you have missed."

Question Can you tell us about the Sunnah acts on the day of eid-ul-fitr?
Answer In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"On the day of `eid, there are some Sunnah acts that we should do, among which are the following:

1-Engage in takbir from fajr until the imam comes out for salah. Takbir is recommended for male, female, young and old.

2-It is also important to make sure to pay zakat-ul-fitr before the salah. Ideally, it should be given in advance so that the poor can enjoy their `eid.

3-Appear in the best dress that you can afford to, that is reasonable and modest.

4-It is recommended to go early to the prayer place,

5-And most importantly, to wish every one the joy of `eid and show true signs of Islamic brotherhood, by shaking hands and embracing and praying: ("Taqabal Allahu Minna wa Minkum" or "May Allah accept it from us and you).

6-It is also considered a good Islamic practice to pay a visit to one another and exchange gifts. The prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Exchange gifts in order to foster love."

7-Remember the true spirit of `eid is reflected in our extreme generosity to the poor and the needy. So, be charitable as best as you can.

8-Make lots of istighfar and pray that Allah accept our fast, prayers and devotion, and may He grant the Ummah glory and success."

Question Can we visit graves on the day of `eid?
Answer In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"Some of the Shafi`ie scholars are of the opinion that it is permissible to visit the graves of our parents, relatives, and friends who have died.

However, many scholars consider this practice undesirable, especially on the day of `eid, which is supposed to be a day of celebration and joy. So, it may be a good idea to postpone visiting graves till the next day or before the eid day."

Question Recently, I started praying 5 times a day. Sometimes when I am doing wudu I get confused and think that I left something out and I should start all over again or continue doing my wudu? Also when I pray sometimes I make a mistake, should I stop praying and start all over again or should I continue praying? Thank you.
Answer In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"It seems to me that you are suffering from a condition called waswas or whispering. In this case, because it is a chronic one, you should simply ignore it. Once you make the niyyah or the intention and you have made wudu', that is it and you don't have to repeat wudu'.

Likewise, once you have made your niyyah and tried your best to pray, that is enough. You don't have to worry about the whispering or doubt. Ask Allah to grant you concentration in Salah."

Question Should men perform nafl namaz or supererogatory prayers in the Mosque or in house on laylat-ul-qadr.
Thank you
Answer In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"There is nothing in the sources which make it obligatory on us to perform nafl namaz or supererogatory prayers in the Mosque or a house. Nafl being a nafl, it is our choice to do it wherever we wish to. However, if the person is making i`tikaf he has no choice but to do it in the Mosque."

Question On the issue of purchasing a house through a mortgage by Muslims in North America.
Does the Fatwa applies to my specific situation, would it be halal for me to mortgage a house? I've seven children and live in Condo( 3 bedrooms) in Ottawa. Quality of life for my family in a Condo is not good, not gone for mortgage and avoid all forms of Riba, had problems getting rental housing because of my family size and current landlord is not going to renew my lease. Isna Cooperation is asking for 25%-40% down payment, don’t have that plus long waiting period. Because of good credit history a bank will approve a mortgage, want to avoid interest, in Summer 2003 I've to look for another Rental property, can foresee same problems as twice before.Does Fatwa on Mortgage and whether it applies to me.

Question I remember our local teacher or ustadh once mentioning that old ladies whose age and appearance does not arouse the desires of men outside their families are excused of exposing their hair outside prayer. Is this true?

Answer In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

"Yes, what your local ustadh has stated is true, because Allah says: "As for women past child-bearing, who have no hope of marriage, it is no sin for them if they discard their (outer) clothing in such a way as not to show adornment. But to refrain is better for them. Allah is Hearer, Knower." (An-Noor: 60)"
