Question Dear scholar, the night journey occurred in a time when the Muslims were under persecution in Makkah. The biographies of the Prophet tell that number of Muslims left Islam when they heard of the story. In your opinion, why this test was given to Muslims in this crucial time.
Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

It is true that Muslims were under persecution and the event that took place before the Mi`raj was the Prophet's trip to Ta'if in search for their support in da`wah, but it was totally rejected and the Prophet was harshly treated by its people. During that trial Allah showed Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) some signs of His power by taking him to Al-Israa' and Al-Mi'raj journey.

This event was a test for the Muslims and non-Muslims. For Muslims we believe in Allah that has absolute power which is beyond its cause and effect notion. This was a creedal test, to which Abu Bakr responded by saying: "If I accept the revelation that comes from Heaven, shouldn't I believe in His journey over night!"

For disbelievers it was a chance they found to prove that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was a liar. That is why some believers who were not strong in faith were influenced by the Quraish claims and followed them, according to some historians.

The purpose of the test was to prove the support and comfort about the Power of Allah. It was a sign of Allah's power of supporting Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and a comfort for Him in the midst of tribulations he was put through. At the same time it was a test of faith for the followers to distinguish between the good and bad, the people with unwavering faith and creed and those with fragile one.

Question How can we utilize the occasion of Al-`Israa' and Al-Mi`raj to better our religious performance as individuals and help push forward the status of Muslims in today's world on all tracks?
Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

1. First of all, this occasion should confirm and strengthen our faith in Allah's help and protection for His deen. As Muslims we should never give up hope in Allah's help.

2. We should take all means possible to practice our deen, to be active in da`wah, and never be deceived by the darkness situation.

3. We should continue work in da`wah and help people to improve their faith.

Question What is the relation between belief in the unseen and Al-Israa' and Al-Mi`raj?
Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

There is a strong relation between belief in the unseen and Al-Israa' and Al-Mi`raj. That is shown in the answer of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was informed about Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)'s claim he had gone to Jerusalem. He clarified that by comparing between believing in the revelation coming from Heaven, which is unseen, and Al-Israa' and Al-Mi`raj which is unseen too. By this comparison he proved that there is a relationship between both events as part of the Muslim faith in the unseen.

Question As you know, the occasion of Al-Israa’ and Al-Mi`raj is approaching, and many orators on Fridays concentrate on what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has seen on that event, and they may ignore how to enlighten ourselves and take the occasion as a lightening torch in the global age. Some of those people may ignore such a vital issue and concentrate on the scenes of the event (i.e. what the Prophet has seen during that journey). Which aspect should we focus on keeping in mind that some people claim that many of the scenes related to the event are transmitted through weak hadiths?
Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Orators and Khateebs should focus on the lessons learned from the journey of Al-Israa' and Al-Mi`raj. Some of these lessons are:

1. Islam is the religion of Allah that He protects and will preserve it forever against all forms of attacks. Allah says: (We have revealed this Book (the reminder) and We will protect it.) (Al-Hijr 15: 9)

2. Delivering the message clearly and never hide any information from the people. When Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was told by Umm Ayman not to tell the people lest they would belie him, he replied by saying: "By Allah, if they ask me I will tell them honestly."

3. It is our duty to carry the message of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and defend it with all what we can.

4. Sending hope in the Muslim Ummah in this critical time similar to the time preceding the event of Al-Israa' and Al-Mi`raj.

Question Dear scholar, As-Salamu `alaykum. The journey of Al-Israa' was full of ghaybi (unseen) issues and events. Indeed, the whole journey is but an unseen event. How can Muslims in their status quo benefit from the creed of belief in the unseen in reforming their affairs?
Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The belief in the unseen should strengthen the Muslims' faith in Allah's support and victory. Almighty Allah helps in the way that we the human beings cannot think or imagine, just if we listened to the du`a' of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when coming from Ta'if: "O Allah! To You I bring my weakness, my helplessness, and my humiliation. O Most Merciful! You are the Lord of the weak, and You are my Lord. To whom would You confide me? To one afar who will misuse me or to an enemy to whom You have given dominance over me?” So in this du`aa' Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) showed his helplessness and oppressions and resorted to Allah's help and support.

So we should develop our faith in Allah's unseen help and support and we should always turn to Allah's unseen power.

Question Respected Scholar, belief in the Unseen is employed by some Muslims in a way that incite effort and prompt work and effort. On the other hand, some Muslims use the belief in the unseen as a justification for defeatism and laziness, claiming that they believe in the unseen and this includes the belief in the future victory of Islam which is a matter of the unseen. According to them, there is no need for work and effort to help Islam. Please comment!
Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The correct belief in the unseen is what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us. In Al-Israa' and Al-Mi`raj is a sign of Allah's power given to spiritually and emotionally support Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to face the trials and tribulations in Makkah. So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not stop working for Islam; the event came at right time when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions were working for Islam and subject to tribulations and tests.

A similar situation happened at the time of Hijarah when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) believed in the unseen, which is the help of Almighty Allah, but he took all the necessary measures and took all preparations for the journey, such as hiding in the cave of thawr, hiring an expert of the road, etc.

So belief in the unseen does not mean that we sit and wait for the miracles to happen. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do your part for everyone will be guided to whatever Allah wishes."

Question I want to know whether it is lawful to celebrate the occasion of Al-Israa' And Al-Mi`raj. Are some forms of celebration lawful, and others unlawful.
Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

First of all, there is no clear-cut sound hadith to state that Isra' and Mi'raj took place at the 27th of Rajab. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not celebrate it the same way we do in many Muslim countries.

It is, however, permissible to make use of this occasion in reminding the people about the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and teach them more about his Sunnah. This is to be done in a moderate way without involving anything that is not permitted by the Shari'ah.

Question Respected Scholar, As-Salamu `alaykum. One of my friends told me that how all the Prophets (peace and blessings be upon them all) prayed behind Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night of Al-Israa' & Al-Mi`raj when they all are dead and it is Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) who will be the first one to come out from his grave. So if they prayed behind Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we can't say that our Prophet is dead and he is still alive. Can you please put some light on this issue? Thank you!
Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

First of all, we have to agree that this journey was all unseen about the power of Allah and His will, that His power is beyond what we see and hear every now and then. So if we accept that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went that night from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to Heaven, then by logic and analogy we have to believe that the prophets were praying behind Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

So the imamah of prophets looked beyond the physical meaning of leading prayers, which we should believe in it.
