| Question |
Is it Islamically recommended to donate money to help those homeless children even if they are non-Muslims?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you.
Yes it is strongly recommended to donate to all those people who are suffering from this disaster regardless of their faith and religion.
Certainly, donating to Muslims is considered as an obligation upon all fellow Muslims. Each Muslim must assist those affected at the level of his or her best. The distance should not be a hindrance to lend them a helping hand of assistance and support. Be kind to all mankind and be thankful to Allah by donating and sharing their sorrows and pains.
As for those kids who become orphans and homeless do assist them in all possible manners and don't let them fall in the hands of those people who are trading and intending to change their faith and religion. These kids shouldn't be left in those strange hands. Let us keep praying for all mankind and let us pray specially to beloved Muslims in Aceh, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Maldives, Somalia and Malaysia. God knows better and may He grant all of them His paradise. To Allah we belong and to Him is our return.

| Question |
Are the victims of the earthquake in Southeast Asia- even if they are not Muslims- in paradise? Or are they in hell? I mean they were victims, and many of them are for sure good, kind people, but not Muslims. So where will they be in paradise or in hell?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you. May Allah accept all of them in His paradise and forgive those who are not Muslims.
Having said this, I shall clarify that according to Muslim faith, the Paradise is only reserved for those who believe in Allah and the message of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and follow the pillars of Islam and iman. In other words, the non-Muslims wouldn't be included unless if the Almighty forgives them. That doesn't mean to undermine other faiths but it is just in line with the teachings of Islam which call upon all mankind to adhere to this religion as it is the last accepted religion by Allah. Let us pray for the Mercy of the Almighty and Forgiveness.

| Question |
What is the duty of Muslims towards those who trade in human kids? Is there a punishment for those child traffickers?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you.
Surely, there is severe and hash punishment for those inhuman who are trading in helpless kids. These traffickers are criminals and they deserve all types of punishments. They are sinful and all mankind should strive to stop this immoral and inhuman activity.
Muslims in those affected places must be vigilant and cautious about this ridiculous activity. They have to fear to Allah and they should not give up their own kids for the sake of few dollars. It is so disheartening and painful to add other pain to the disaster. Please don't deprive the kids from living with their beloved ones, please do remember that these kids deserve decent and respected life.
The governments of those affected countries should live up to their responsibilities, they shouldn't allow this tragedy to happen.
As a Muslim individual, you should do all your level of best to oppose this inhuman activity, do speak up against the criminal and senseless people who are trading in these innocent kids and depriving them from having normal and descent life.
All in all, those criminals must bear in mind that one day they would have to face the punishment of the Almighty and that day they will regret this barbaric activity.
Let us pray to Allah to protect those children against evils and devils who are attempting to destroy their faith and identity.

| Question |
How can Muslim individuals, NGOs, and governments help the orphaned and homeless children? Is there an Islamic punishment for negligence in this duty?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you.
All Muslims have to do their best to put a quick end to the trauma and atrocity in which these innocent children are living. The capable individuals have to assist in building homes for these children and helping them to go back to schools. The tears of these helpless kids must have an end. The rich fellow Muslims have to fear Allah in the wealth which is in their hands. They should remember that they are entrusted in this wealth and they have to assist those who are in dire need to their assistance. Every Muslim should imagine if these kids were his or her kids, what would he or she do for them? Do remember your own kids and assist these kids today and protect them against inhuman treatment, Allah would protect your kids when they would need His protection.
Certainly, all negligent fellow Muslims would be punished on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have made it clearly that whoever does not pay attention to the problems of fellow Muslims, he or she is not among them.
In this respect, those negligent would be surely punished in Hereafter. Do donate cloths, food, money and any valuable items you have. Allah would reward you. Do always pray for hopeless and helpless kids, may Allah grant them His Mercy and Protection.

| Question |
Dear scholar, jazaka Allah khayran for your time and effort. I am wondering whether going to voluntary Hajj would be better or donating the money saved for this purpose for Tsunami-hit children?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you.
Certainly, assisting by donating to those beloved Muslims affected is considered as I said earlier an obligation upon all Muslims. However, there is no harm for you to continue your journey to Hajj and you should remember them in your prayers in the holy lands. Having said that, you should still consider donating whatever you can in kind as well as in cash. They need cloths, food, money and any thing that would provide them with decent life and relieve their pain and tragedy.
May Allah accept your Hajj and do always remember them and remind all your group about them and do donate to them while you are in that blessed land!

| Question |
Respected scholar, the earthquake and Tsunami have left large groups of people without homes. They may have to live and share the same mixed shelter. Could you please explain the Islamic ethics regarding this issue?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you and may Allah forgive those who lost their lives in this tragedy. However, Islam calls upon Muslims to assist those who are affected in all possible means. They must feel and share their sorrow and pain. They must be involved in collections or distributions of aid to those affected at their level of best. It is an obligation upon all Muslims to come to the assistance of these helpless people.
As for sharing or mixing shelters for those affected, Islam does call upon them to observe at the level of their best its teachings and principles. In other words, they have to avoid all unnecessary mixture or contact between opposite genders.
Certainly, they will always remember the teachings of Islam. Having said them, most of their interactions and mixture would fall under the ruling of emergency or necessity whereby some prohibited items and activities might be committed but without any sins. I am confident that, the situation in which they are experiencing would not allow them to think of committing any sinful actions or deeds. May Allah protect them and remove their pain and hardship.

| Question |
As-salamu 'alaykum! If somebody donates money intended for the victims of tsunami-hit children through non-governmental organization but the one collecting did not give as intended but instead it diverted to orphanage outside the affected counties, will I have the same reward? Jazakum Allah kahyran!
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you for donating and contributing.
You should be vigilant and careful when you want to donate as there are so many criminals and liars who are collecting the money on behalf of these victims.
Nevertheless, your reward would be the same since you did your best and your intention was to donate to those victims. Certainly, that agency which cheated you would face its fate on the day of Judgment.

| Question |
As-salamu `alaykum. My question is a very simple one. How can we help? The thing is that I am a student and I have very little money. I cannot 'adopt' one of the children? How can I help them? To see my little brothers and sisters suffering so much has truly affected me - but I don’t know what can I do with the limited resources that I have. Please suggest something that I can do, in sha' Allah.
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you very much and may Allah reward you for your good and nice intention.
There are so many ways of helping them such as donating cloths, food for those who are closed to them, donating even a cent or one dollar, and praying for them.
Surely, you don't need to give away all your money but do donate whatever you can. Your little and the little of all beloved fellow Muslims means a lot for them. In addition, I shall suggest you to assist those trustworthy agencies which are collecting donations for them by all possible means. You may also assist through encouraging others to donate and assist them in kind or in cash. You may certainly assist through your continuous supplication that Allah put a quick end to their atrocities and tragedies.
Finally, any good idea contributing to their cause would be a help and assistance to them. May Allah protect all homeless people and beloved kids who lost their parents and beloved ones.

| Question |
Can zakah money be used to help tsunami-affected non Muslims or non Muslims in general?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you.
It is strongly recommended to assist and donate as much as you can to all tsunami-affected people Muslims as well as non-Muslims.
However, as for zakah money, it should be only given to those people stated in the Qur'an (9: 60). They are designated as legitimate recipients of zakah. Having said that, the affected Muslims might fall under one of the recipients of zakah but for non-Muslims they would be only allowed to receive zakah if there is an indication that this would lead to their conversion to Islam, otherwise, they might be given any other donation but not zakah.

| Question |
There is a controversy about a Catholic organization wanting to set up an orphanage. Should Muslims set up their own orphanages, or is it better to keep them in foster care arrangements and provide ongoing sponsorships?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you.
Islam calls upon Muslims to take care of orphans and provide them with whatever they need in kind as well as in cash.
Furthermore, there is severe punishment for those people who humiliate or do injustice against the orphans. In this regard, Muslims must do their best to provide the orphans the decent life and protect them against those who are willing to take advantage from their hardship and difficult situation.
As for setting up orphanages by Muslims or non-Muslims, there is no harm in doing so provided that the orphanages are not used to change the faiths of the Muslim kids. That is against all human values and rights. Muslim kids should be allowed to practice and learn the basics and fundamentals of their faith. They should not be turned into other religions because
of few dollars and aid given to them. It is against human rights to misuse the aid and donations to the needy people. The aid should not be on religious belief basis, they are all mankind and deserve respect and decent lives. No body should take advantage from their needs to impose a belief or faith.
For those people, Muslims or non-Muslims, willing to build orphanage they must have respect to the faiths of kids.
As what is better in terms of building orphanages or keeping kids in foster families, I would stand for both but not on religious basis. In other words, all kids should be allowed to enter the orphanage built by Muslims or non-Muslims. The orphanage must be used as a tool to put an end to the trauma and atrocity of the kids not to change their faith or turn them into different types of beliefs.
All in all, politicization or segregation based on faith at this junction of the time, is rejected and inhuman. All religions and faiths must come together and fight against the hunger, trauma and tragedy faced by all namely, Muslims and others. There should be no time for fighting among the followers of religions. They must respect one another. Muslims must be given the right to bury their known dead Muslims in the way they want and Buddhists should also be allowed to cremate only their dead not other dead people.
Islam stands for mutual respect of religions and faiths. Islam also stands for cooperation among nations and peoples. Let us put aside differences in the face of this atrocity and tragedy. Let us come together to protect those innocent kids and helpless and homeless peoples. May Allah grant all of us His Mercy and Forgiveness.
