Answer
As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,
It is better for a woman to have the company of a Mahram when she is traveling for a journey that takes three or more days, however if the journey is safe and she is confident that there will be no danger to her physically and morally, then she is allowed to travel, even without a Mahram.
The Sunnah for Zhur is four rakat before the obligatory prayer and two after that.
If you are staying in any place for 15 days or longer, then you should pray the full prayer, but if the period of your stay or journey is less than this, then you should make the Qasr prayers (shortened) during the journey, (i.e. it is permissible to combine Zhur and Asr prayers and Maghrib and Isha prayers).

Question
Salaam Alaikum. Insha'Allah I have a few short questions.
1) In between the two prostrations of each rakat, is it bidaa to say "rabb ighfirlee wa irhaamnee?"
2) When entering a masjid for fajr, should one pray two rakat each for the sunnah prayer and for the prayer for entering the masjid, or should both of these prayers be combined into one, two-rakat prayer. If not, which one should one pray first?
3) Is it wrong to make dua for a sports team. Like, is it a waste of breath to ask Allah to help your favorite team win a game or should we simply feel free to ask Him for anything within reason.
4) I heard a hadith about something like "when a husband and wife walk and hold hands, their sins drop from their fingertips like water." Is this hadith authentic? If so, does it mean that we should hold hands with our wives because it rids us of our sins, or does it mean that it is a sinful behavior and produces sins?
I apologize for all of the questions and may Allah reward you for your invaluable service.

Wa Alaikum As-Salaam wa Rahmatullah,
1. It is good to make a du’a between the two sajdas and the du’a that you have mentioned is recommended.
2. When you enter the Masjid for the Jumm’ah prayer, if you have enough time, then pray two rakat Tahhaytul-Masjid and two rakat for the sunnah of Fajr. However, if there is not much time before the jamma’ah prayer, then two rakat for Sunnah is sufficient.
3. You can make du’a for anything that is Halal and good. Good sports are encouraged in Islam and there is nothing wrong in sporting competition and wishing to win the game. You can wish and pray for your self as well as your favorite team. Of course you should pay more attention to ask Allah, may He be glorified, for His mercy, guidance, and health so that you can live in obedience to him and that you should struggle for truth and justice always. Also remember in your prayers millions of those people who are suffering because of wars, famine, and hardships. Direct your prayers more to these serious issues. May Allah bless you.
4. I have not come across this hadith so I cannot say for sure that it is authentic. There are other Hadiths, in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, emphasized love and care between husband and wife. The Prophet said, in one hadith, “that giving a morsel of food and putting in the mouth of your spouse is also an act of goodness.”

Question
Assalamu Alaikum.
What was the reason behind shifting the Qibla from Jerusalem to the Ka'baa ? An article in the Times stated, it was because the jews rejected Muhammad, sallallahu alaihi wasallam. Is this true, and thus dictated politically ?
This article also claimed that the muslims believe the Miraj is a spiritual journey and not physical. I always thought it was physical and not a vision.
Please explain.

Answer
Wa Alaykum As-Salaam wa Rahmatullah,
Allah says in the Qur’an, “We see the turning of your face for guidance to the heavens, now we shall turn thy face towards a Qiblah that shall please you…” (2:144) It is very clear from this ayah, that the direction of the Qiblah was changed from Jerusalem to Mecca, because this is what Allah wanted and this was most pleasing to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and to the early community. It is totally wrong to say that the direction of the Qiblah was changed because of the Jewish position towards Islam. It is a historical fact that the Qiblah was changed in the 2nd years of the Hijrah, about 17 months after the migration of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from Mecca to Medina. During this time the relations between the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and the Jewish community of Medina were quite good. The opposition of the Jews and the breaching of the contracts with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, started later. So there is no truth in this claim, that the Qiblah changed was a political action. It was purely a religious one, and a spiritual one. The Kabah was the original Qiblah of all the Prophets of Allah, peace be upon them all, even prophets Da’ud and Sulayman, peace be upon them. Even when they built the Masjid in Jerusalem, its Qiblah was towards the south, which is the direction of Mecca. The Kabah was supposed to be, from the beginning, the Qiblah of the believers. Muslims were asked only temporarily to turn towards Jerusalem, so that Allah may test them, in weather they will follow the command of Allah or not. As for as the claim that Muslims believe that the Miraj was a spiritual journey and not physical, this is not correct. Most of the Muslims believe that it was both spiritual and physical, only small groups of people take it as being only a spiritual journey. The Qur’an says, “Glory to be to him, who took his servant on a journey by night, from the Masjid Al-Haraam to the Masjid Al-Aqsa.” (17:1) The very words of this ayah indicate some extraordinary event. Allah, may he be glorified, speaks of his glory, majesty and greatness that he toke his servant during the night from one place to another for merely spiritual experiences, theses expressions are not used. The spiritual experience in visions and dreams happen to many people.
Allah knows best.

Asalamu Alikum
I was hoping you might help with some advice. I feel very far away from Allah(swt) and I feel like my life is worthless. I tend to watch alot of t.v and do nothing else. I pray alhamdullah, but feel like its just something to get done with really fast and back to my lazy self in front of the t.v. I feel its affecting my life, because I feel so empty inside. I was wondering how can I get back on track and build up a new relationship with Allah(swt) and feel like my life is worth something??? Please help.

Wa Alaykum As-Salaam,
May Allah help you to get over your problem. It seems to me that you are not praying in a jamm’a. I suggest that you pay full attention to the Tahara (purity) in your Wudu. Wash yourself carefully and thoroughly and go to a near by Masjid, ten or fifteen minutes before the jamm’a salah and pray the sunnah, read Qur’an (if there is time) and pray with other Muslims; get away from your TV, walk and breath the fresh air, eat good food and exercise. Insha’Allah, you will come back to the right path. Switch from TV for one month; don’t worry if you don’t know the news, first take care of yourself. May Allah bless you, insha’Allah.
