Question My younger brother went for Hajj. He doesn't speak with my elder brother at all because of some family disputes. I would like to know should he get in touch with the elder brother to get the issues resolved or be sorry to him before the Hajj? I mean is this not one of the prerequisites before going to Hajj? Will his Hajj be accepted? Please answer in the light of the Sunnah and give reference.
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother, it is really a prerequisite that the one who intends to perform Hajj should repent from all sins he might have committed. He should seek Allah’s Forgiveness, settle disputes and reconcile differences between himself and anyone else, let alone his brother. Referring to this, Allah Almighty says, “The pilgrimage is (in) the well known months, and whoever is intended to perform the pilgrimage therein (let him remember that) there is (to be) no lewdness nor abuse nor angry conversation on the pilgrimage. And whatsoever good ye do Allah knoweth it. So make provision for yourselves (here after); for the best provision is to ward off evil. Therefore keep your duty unto Me, O men of understanding.” (Al-Baqarah: 197)

Once, he holds the intention he should be free of all kinds of immoral acts, great or small.

It is the duty of your brother who went to Hajj to forgive his brother whatever he committed so that Allah may accept his pilgrimage. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “He who performs Hajj without committing sins or having intercourse with his wife, then he returns back while being sinless as the newly-born baby.”

Question What is the philosophy of `Uudhiyah?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The purpose or the philosophy of `Uudhiyah is that the rich who can afford slaughtering a sacrificial animal in the `Eid days should give something for the poor and the needy in the society and this is one thing.

Another thing is to remember our father Abraham and his son Ishmael (peace and blessings be upon them both) who served Allah sincerely.

Abraham once has seen in a night vision that he was offering his own son to God in sacrifice. In the daytime, Abraham immediately took all measures to translate his vision into reality. Allah Almighty says: “ So We gave him tidings of a gentle son. And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast. Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon his face. We called unto him: O Abraham: Thou hast already fulfilled the vision. Lo! thus do We reward the good. Lo! that verily was a clear test. Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim.” (As-Saffat: 101-107)

Question Is it allowed to apply non-alcoholic perfume during state of Ihram to avoid bad smell?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

After entering into the state of Ihram, one is not allowed to apply any kind of perfume. When you intend Ihram you make ghusl and apply perfume at that time and after that you are not allowed to apply any kind of perfumes until the Ihram is over, i.e. after throwing the first Jamarat.

Question Who is obliged to offer the sacrifice?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear sister in Islam, offering sacrifice on the tenth day of Dhul-Hijjah after the `Eid prayer is a confirmed Sunnah to cement the relationship between members of the Muslim society and to strengthen it. Training the Muslims to care for one another and to support each other.

It is a Sunnah that should be practiced by the rich who can afford to buy an animal, say a sheep or a cow and to slaughter it in the `Eid days and to distribute their meat as follows:

One third for oneself and one’s family. The second third goes for one’s friends, neighbors and relatives whether they are rich or poor. The third part should go to the poor who cannot afford to buy meat in the `Eid days.

In this context, we should tell you that the meat of the sacrifice should not be sold wholly or in part.

Question As-Salamu `alaykum Dr. Muhammad.

May Allah Almighty reward you for your good deeds. My question is about those who are called ‘free thinkers’. In your opinion, what is the best way to convince them? Since I have lot of people around me and so I want to utilize this opportunity. Moreover, I do believe that it is our duty to deliver the message of Islam to non-Muslims.
Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

We earnestly implore Allah to fulfill your desire to deliver the message of Islam to others.

Islam, as you know, depends on human mind and the revelation that came from Allah. There are many verses in the Qur’an to command man to use his own mind to think and research.

The people who call themselves ‘free thinkers’ depend solely on their minds and pay no regard to religion or dogmatic evidences. This should not upset us since the Qur’an itself honors mind and human thinking.

I advise you when you talk to such people to be calm and broad-minded. Read the Qur’an and be sure about the way that the Qur’an talks to the non-believers and atheists the way and the proofs used the Qur’an to argue with such people are very effective but when you talk to the free thinkers do not refer directly to the Qur’an since they do not believe in any divine books as they claim.

Start with them from the very obvious matters and gradually touch on the most sophisticated problems, talk to them about the Qur’an in the context of human mind and how the Qur’an honors human intellect and reasoning and requires the Muslims to learn and to think deeply about everything and tell them that the Qur’an is not ignoring free thinking but free thinking should have a limit and boundaries.

We cannot let our mind set loose and doubt everything in our life. We have to be certain and sure about ourselves and about the world in which we live. If we give false information to our mind, then definitely we will reach a false and wrong judgment.

We should ask ourselves simply who are we and why we are here? Who is the creator or organizer and controller of these things? Who directs our mind and our vision and our life in general? There must be someone who is greater that anything we see. And he should not be subjected to time or space or similar to anyone he created. Simply, because the similarity between this Supreme One or Supreme Power with anything we see or touch or grasp by our mind will make this supreme power is subject to imperfection.

And be affected by the duration of time and the change of space. And again we have to search for another who is more supreme simply lead us to believe in Allah who created us and created everything for our benefit. We should know that everything in this world points to its creator. If there is no creator, there is life or free thinking or restricted. There will be no space and time. Once you accept that this world has a creator you shall accept that this creator has the right to dominate his creation and to be alone its controller and guide and you will be ready to accept his commands and to work according his revelation that he sent to us via his prophets and Messengers.

I conclude that man’s arrogance is the greatest obstacles between man and Allah. May Allah guide you and help you!

Allah Almighty knows best.

Question The Hindus in our Kerala state (a south Indian state) used to go to a famous temple called “shabari mala temple”. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Hindus from all over the Kerala state and from outside Kerala go to that temple to perform their worships and they consider that journey as “holy”.

This year, some of our Muslim brothers who are workers of an Islamic party conducted farewell parties for the Hindus who are going on a holy journey to “shabari mala”.

They state that this is the real and ideal approach to bring other communities close to Muslims. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had allowed and arranged for Jews and Christians to do their prayers in Al-Masjid An-Nabawi in Madinah when they came to visit the Prophet. What is your opinion on this subject?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) allowed the Christians to pray in his Mosque at Madinah and he gave them a nice reception.
The Prophet also talked to the Jews and visited some of them even in their temples in Madinah. Also, it is reported that `Umar ibn al-Khattab went to a Christian church and met the Patriarch of Jerusalem and took the city keys from him upon his request. Moreover, `Umar commanded `Ali ibn Abi Talib to take some Muslims with him and to go to the church to have a meal prepared for him for this occasion.

Islam, in many ways, tries to bring people together and release the tension between nations for the benefit of humanity. We are, also told that Allah will never punish any people without sending a Prophet to teach them about right and wrong, good and evil.

In light of these few examples, we say that there is no worry to encourage the Hindus to practice their own religion without necessarily be seriously involved or accepting it as a genuine religious rite.

It is left for Muslim to see how much he can serve his religion and to get people at least sympathetic with it. In many cases, examples surpasses words. May Allah guide you and help you.

Question What should one do if one’s ablution is vitiated while listing to the Khutbah at `Arafat?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In the case your ablution is broken while the `Arafat Khutbah is going on, and the crowd does not allow you to go to renew your ablution, then I advise you to perform tayamum (dry ablution) by hitting your hands even on your thigh.
With your left hand you wipe over the other arm from elbow to the wrist as if you are washing it. Then with the right hand, do the same with your left arm. Then, hit your hands the same way and then rub your face as if you are washing it just one time and pray.

I advise you to perform ablution after the congregational prayer is over. After that you can pray at the two times, Zuhr and `Asr shortened and Allah will give you double rewards, in sha’ Allah.

Question I am 32 years married with 2 sons. My main problem is the porno movies as I cannot stop watching these movie. What is my punishment? How can I stop?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Before I tell you about the punishment of watching pornographic movies, I should tell you first to be aware of the bad consequences of your deeds in this world.

You are losing yourself, damaging your brain, your psyche and distorting your character.

Allah created you for a good and a noble cause which is to worship Him. Allah says, “I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me. I seek no livelihood from them, nor do I ask that they should feed Me.”

Allah is honoring you and you belittling yourself. Allah is raising you, and you are lowering yourself down. Allah takes you and even grasps you to the straight path and you are slipping away of it. Once you miss the straight path you are lost in this world and in the next. I may advise you to read the following verse and ponder over it:

“ But he who turneth away from remembrance of Me, his will be a narrow life, and I shall bring him blind to the assembly on the Day of Resurrection. He will say: My Lord! Wherefore hast Thou gathered me (hither) blind, when I was wont to see? He will say: So (it must be). Our revelations came unto thee but thou didst forget them. In like manner thou art forgotten this Day.” (Taha: 123-127)

Pornography is a Satanic invention. It is destructive to the person and the society. I may ask you what you learn from pornography and what you benefit??

I will answer it to you. You benefit nothing but Allah’s anger and curse. Pornography makes you even underestimate yourself and makes you look at woman in a non-godly and sinful sense even if she is closely related to you. May Allah guide you to understand the real danger of what you are getting addicted to and helps you come out of it and repent.

Question My husband is 52 years old and I am 44. We have performed Hajj in 1992. After that, my husband performed `Umraha, but now he is involved in prostitution, Zina. Is my husband’s Hajj valid? His logic is like that he is taking care of his 3 children of 19,17,15 and he hasn’t left his wife[me] and as he gives Zakah regularly he will be forgiven.
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

First we pray to Allah to guide him to understand the consequence of his works and deeds.

Zina is totally against the religious teachings of Islam and I may go as far to tell you that his punishment in the Hereafter and in this world shall be multiplied.

Your husband has forgotten that Hajj is to perfect our behavior and religion and to get more faithful and sincere with Allah and to be more adaptable and sociable to his fellow Muslims and to his fellow humans.

To look after his three children and to pay Zakah and even to be more charitable person does not allow him to violate Allah’s Commands in forbidding fornication and adultery and homosexuality.

We cannot take from religion something and leave other things, and we cannot set principles for ourselves apart from our Shari`ah. The acts he commit cannot be justified in anyway.

We ask Allah to help him to come out of all these sins and to repent and save himself from destruction in this world and in the next.

Please keep advising him and remind him of Allah’s severe punishment to the sinners in the Hereafter and remind him of his daughters.

Question What is the meaning of Riba ?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Riba is to lend someone a certain amount of money on the condition that you take your money back with interest on the terms you agreed.

Islam forbids interest for the benefit of man since Riba is capitalizing on people’s misery and need.

Allah says very clearly in the Qur’an, “…whereas Allah permitteth trading and forbiddeth usury.” (Al-Baqarah: 275)
