| Question |
Does the person wearing ihram have to show the right or left arm? When should he do so: all the the time or in specific time, because I see people doing both so I get confused?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
A pilgrim is recommended to show his right arm while making the first tawaf, which is called tawaf al-qudoom (the welcome circumambulation). It is also recommended to go around the Ka’bah in a faster pace in the first three rounds. After that, the pilgrim should cover his arm and remains during the rituals of Hajj.

| Question |
Are you still the Imam in St. Louis?
Can a new Muslim go to hajj with the money which he earned in a questionable way before becoming a Muslim?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Assalamu`alykum brother Abdallah, yes I am still the Imam in St. Louis. Jazakum Allah khairan for your asking.
Regarding your question, Islam does away with everything that went before conversion. Therefore, it is allowed to continue using this money for hajj and other things, unless this money belongs to someone, in which case the money has to be returned to the rightful owner.

| Question |
What should I do if regular vaginal discharge that comes out off and on throughout the day and is not continuous comes out during tawaf? Do I have to stop and go do istinja’ and wudu’ and change my clothes and then start all over? I don’t think it will be easy because of the crushing crowds.
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Following the opinion held by the late Sheikh Mustafa Az-Zarqa, may Allah bless his soul, I believe that this vaginal discharge is a regular wetness that does not break the wudu’, especially that is uncontrollable and most women get it throughout the day. Therefore, if it happens that you get this type of discharge, you don’t need to break the tawaf and renew your wudu’.

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum wa rahmatullahi wabarakatuh. How can one combine the Dhuhr and `Asr salah together? Does that mean praying Dhuhr very close to the `Asr time and then praying `Asr at its earliest time?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
There are two options regarding this, both held by renowned scholars. The first one, which is adopted by the Hanafi School, is called al-jam` as-suri (the nominal combining). The way you perform it is you delay the Dhuhr until it’s very close to the `Asr time, and then you perform the `Asr in its earliest time. The second form, which is adopted by other scholars, is when you pray the Dhuhr in its time and then you pray the `Asr right away, or you delay the Dhuhr until the time of `Asr and perform it first, then the `Asr after.

| Question |
If someone fainted during standing on mountain `Arafat and he was taken to the hospital and then he was not discharged until the day of `Arafah was over, is the Hajj acceptable or since the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Hajj is `Arafah" he must re-do it?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
If he was taken to the hospital during `Arafah, most likely the hospital will be in `Arafah, as the Saudi Hajj authorities have taken this into consideration and build hospitals within the borders of `Arafat. In addition, if the pilgrim catches some time from the day and night then the standing on `Arafah has been fulfilled.

In brother Abdulla's question, I am very surprise to see that you claimed that you are the Imam in St. Louis. I live in St. Louis and know that you are no longer the Imam for more than a year. How can we trust your answer when you are not telling the truth about yourself!
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thank you brother for your comment. Although I am no longer the imam of the foundation, I am still performing my imam role and work, including, but not limited to, leading prayers, performing marriages/divorce, counselling and resolving conflicts in the community, as well as leading the Friday prayer. If you still live in St. Louis, you are most welcome to join us next Friday at North West mosque for I will be leading the prayer insha’Allah and I will be more than happy to respond to your inquiries.
As for the reliability of my answers, I am being questioned and I give answers to the best of my knowledge. If you don’t like my answers, feel free to contact another scholar.

We would like to remind our viewers of the importance of thinking well about our brothers and sisters in Islam and not to jump into conclusion for maybe we are not aware of details. Moreover, when dealing with our scholars, Sheikhs and Imams, we are to show a great level of respect, and if we want to criticize something, we make sure our criticism is put in kind and polite words.

| Question |
As-Salamu `alaykum, I have already performed Hajj before marriage, al-hamdulillah. Now my wife wants to perform Hajj, even though she does not have money of her own, and I have other important financial obligations (children's education, etc. etc.) upon me. Is the Hajj fard (obligatory) on her in this situation? If not, does she have to wait? Secondly, if she gets enough money for her only, and I do not have sufficient money for the Hajj expenses for myself and four children (since we cannot leave them here, because we do not have any close relatives here), will the Hajj be still fard upon her, or she has to wait till I as the mahram also can afford to accompany her? Jazaka Allahu Khairan for the answer.
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
I don’t believe she has to wait until you can afford accompanying her. If she got money that would be sufficient for her hajj expenses, then she can join a company of trustworthy and reliable Muslim sisters who are going for hajj as well. In this case, you can remain with the children and allow your wife to go and fulfill her religious obligation. The problem that many people face is that they keep delaying it for reasons that are hard to end. You never know what would happen and when the person is going to meet his lord.

| Question |
What should the pilgrim say during the sa'y? Is sleeping in muzdalifah required because a lot of brothers told me I should pray maghrib and `isha and then leave by midnight because that gives me enough time to throw the jamarat and do tawaf al-ifadah quickly and without trouble; is this true?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Start the sa`y from Mount Safa and read verse 158 from surat al-Baqarah: “Behold! Safa and Marwa are among the Symbols of Allah. So if those who visit the House in the Season or at other times, should compass them round, it is no sin in them. And if any one obeyeth his own impulse to Good, be sure that Allah is He Who recogniseth and knoweth.”
You should now ascend Safa and, facing the Ka’bah, make whatever supplication you choose. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), used to say three times "There is no god but Allah".
You should now proceed towards Mount Marwah, walking at a normal pace until you reach the green marker. Men should run until they reach the next green marker, whereupon they should revert to a normal walking pace until they reach Marwah. Women should proceed throughout at normal walking pace all the time. You are now ready to make the return journey, walking where you should walk and, if a man, running, if able, where you should run. This is your second passage.
You should now repeat the procedure until you have completed seven passages, ending your Sa'y at Marwah. While performing Sa'y, you should pray to Allah as you wish and recite verses from the Holy Qur'an.
As for the sleeping in Muzdalifa, it is wajib, but how long of the night the pilgrim should stay is subject to differences of opinion among scholars. The ideal way is that, if you have no reason that delayed you in Arafah, is that you spend the night at Muzdalifah. Do not throw the jamarat before sunrise. You have the option that you go first and do tawaf al-ifadah and then go back and do the jamarat. Or you can go to do the jamarat first and then proceed with tawaf al-ifadah.

| Question |
If someone breaks his wudu' during the tawaf, say after he has done one or two rounds, what should he do? Does he have to start all over or go back, make wudu' and then continue from where he stopped?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
If someone breaks his wudu' during the tawaf, he should simply go back, make a fresh wudu', and immediately resume the tawaf. So if a person has performed two rounds, for instance, and on third he lost his wudu', then he should repeat the third round only. One must not disconnect the ibadah (tawaf in this case) by other mundane things like going to the hotel, shopping, eating, etc.; rather a person should renew his wudu' and then resume the tawaf.

| Question |
As-Salamu`alaykum wa rahmatullah, I have a question, so please do answer it insha'Allah. I am confused about one thing. It is said that a woman's periods starts when she sees the menstrual blood. I was preparing myself for salah when I went to check my private parts and saw the menstrual blood. But it hasn’t yet soiled my undergarments; in other words, it was clearly inside the vaginal lips but not outside. Now does my periods start when I saw it or when it came outside and soiled the pad (I don’t know exactly when it came out and soiled the pad). I am sure about one thing that when I checked my private parts (even though it was inside the vagina) when I cleaned it with the toilet paper there was clearly menstrual blood on it. So did my period start when I saw it for the very first time even though it hasn’t yet soiled the outer clothes? Please let me know as I am very confused about it.
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Menstruation starts with the first few drops during the time a woman usually gets her period. When you see the blood, even few drops, then you have started the monthly cycle. If the period starts, then stops, then starts again, it does not matter. You may use a piece of cotton or a cloth to distinguish the blood. It is not necessary for the menstrual blood to soil the undergarment; it might start as few drops and then increases. Once you put the cloth or the cotton and it comes out clear, then the monthly cycle has ended, regardless of yellow or brownish discharges after.
